Oil pressure slow on cold start
#1

In the last few days I have noticed that the oil pressure stays in the red for a few seconds AFTER the engine is running. Usually the needle will rise as the car starts. Everything is normal and the problem is only after sitting all night ( temp 55-65 deg. )

Any ideas as to what can cause this? Oil is royal purple 20W50 and it at the correct mark on the oil dipstick. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

How is your oil pressure when it's running? It sounds like the oil is draining over night. What oil filter are you using?

If it's only for a second, I wouldn't worry about it as is usually take a bit of time to build up the oil pressure.

If it is much longer that what you are used to, you might think about starting with a thinner oil as it starts to get cooler. 20-50 really shouldn't be to bad for 55-65 degrees, but it tends to get relavely thick in the cold months.

Also, if you haven't changed oil/filter recently, I'd do that first just to make sure your dealing with clean fluids in the system and your filter isn't clogging.

Lastly, it could also be your oil pressure sensor. They rarely go bad (although sometimes they leak). But again, unless it is unusually long or if you hear more valve chatter than normal (oil starvation), I wouldn't mess too much with it.

oil pressure when running is about 4 bars.

just changed the oil, not filter.

using Mahle.

I'll change the filter this weekend and see if the problem goes away.

thanks to all.

Having this problem also..... Cold start takes a few seconds before pressure comes up. Fresh oil, filter and running 5-50 syn. Any thoughts?

If it's a new problem since the oil change, the filter could be bad?

If it's not a new problem, Paragon has a good page somewhere on oil pressure and arcane reasons for it being low. I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT: It's a fun read anyway... http://www.paragon-p...sults.asp?ID=54

Quote:Other possibilities for low oil pressure include a bad oil filter, a blockage in the oil channel lines, low oil, a not tight enough crank bolt (155ft pounds or more), lack of a rubber o-ring behind the washer on the crank that drives the oil pump, a bad oil pressure sender, and a failing oil pump.

Follow up: The problem on my car is now solved. The OPRV had seperated and was in 2 pieces......reason unknown. Removed from the block, installed new o-rings and seal ring. Problem fixed.
