Oil change at local (non-Porsche) mechanic ???

Although I have used a few good Porsche mechanics in my area my work/kid schedule doesn't allow me much flexibility to bring the car in. For any serious work I always figure it out, but I am thinking of bringing the car to my local (non-Porsche) mechanic for her spring oil change and New York State safety inspection. My plan is to bring the oil filter and oil (how may quarts do I need again?) and have them do the work for me.

Thoughts, recommendations, warnings are greatly appreciated.

OK, flame me, but I have on occasion had my oil changed at Walmart. I furnish the filter and crush ring, and upgrade to synthetic. It's quite handy to do some shopping instead of killing time in a waiting room.

The only warning I would give would be to make sure they lift/raise/jack your car carefully. Sometimes, the tech might not pay attention to the fragile rocker panels and bend/distort/break them or snap the clips. The other issue is the filter mounting orientation. Make sure you check that they cleaned up after themselves since the oil can get all over when you remove the filter. Other than, I agree- supply the materials and get it done. Luckily, I'm REAL close to the RSB garage... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif[/img]

You need 6.87 quarts. Get 7 qts; oil filter will take about .5qt. of the 6.87. Change with out an oil filter is about 6 qts.
use a new aluminum ring on the oil pan plug each change.
Ask them to look in the oil for metal flakes. If seen this usually means bearing issues...not good. Also ask if oil looks like chocolate milk, that means coolant in the oil; means possible head gasket issues.
It is such an easy job that I do it myself, I understand the time thing, but the old oil can tell you a lot about what is going on in the engine. It can warn you of things that you would want to know about asap. My son wants me to change oil every 3K, but I do at 5K with a Canton cartridge filter change every 10K miles.

yup - that thing was the best add-on yet - simple - more effective than stock - no signs of dry start issues (unlike the early model) - no mess at change time

Looking at the PET I am a little confused, but it is either 900 123 049 30 or 900 123 118 30. I don't replace mine every oil change.

Go to www.paragon-products.com and download the PET (Porsche parts catalog, where I got this info - free from Paragon) and you can also order the OEM Mahle filters for about $7 ea and the ring.

Doing your own oil change is easy, just messy unless you have the Canton filter setup mentioned above.

Non Porsche place oil change can leave you with a belly-pan full of oil.

So can Porsche places in my experience.

I believe that the correct drain plug sealing ring is 900 123 049 30, about $2.04 from my local dealer @ 20% off list. OEM oil filters were $6.11 from the same dealer.

Once again I need to say "Thanks !" to everyone for the info. I have the oil and will be ordering the filter and sealing ring shortly... If everything works out she should have fresh oil and a new NY State inspection shortly and be ready for another season of fun.
