Not starting
#1

Since I've got the car back with the rebuild engine there's a problem getting it started.
The shop that rebuild it already reported an issue with (they thought) the after market alarm and billed me for a very expensive repair.
They also claimed this burned the Motronic so it was replaced, again rather expensive.

The day I picked it up the car started easily.

The next morning it was near dead, the dash lights and instruments would come on, you'd hear a click under the hood but nothing more.
After many tries and things like wiggling the wires behind the dash it suddenly sprang to life.
I did my shopping and again could not get it started.

The next day, last Friday, the car was towed to a reputable shop and a day later I could pick it up, they had found 'a loose wire'.
Saturday morning it would only start after many tries.

When I did drive it I found it would cut out at around 4000 rpm, a bit like a starving engine, also the rev counter would at such a moment immediately drop to zero.
One time it would pull right up to the red line but most times there was this hesitation at around 4000 rpm.
Another weird observation, the severe vibrations that I suspected were due to badly set op balance shafts have since the fix of the loose wire become a lot less. (Wednesday we're going to install a replacement motor mount)

Today the same thing, initially it'll not start, there's just that click of a relay.
An attached voltmeter showed the battery voltage hardly moved from about 12.3 V.

I've had the foot well open and gone as far as they're accessible over most cables and connectors, what else to look for?
I know the DME relay can be funny but I read it should at least crank?
Is there a relay that operates the starter motor and that's going bad?

(It seems the blink test is not implemented on a European car.)

Sounds like a wire shorting out.

Does the starter turn over strongly? AND the engine just does not start?

Or does the starter always turn over weakly?

Check main engine ground wire. Check very closely all behind dash connections. The connection clips behind guage cluster are easily broken.

ALSO: strongly consider changing to another auto shop.

Nothing happens except the sound of a relay clicking.

I will try to look at power to the fuel pump and starter solenoid.

Oh yes, when the car occasionally does start there's nothing unusual about it, strong cranking.
After all the engine was changed out only a few weeks ago and by concequence all wires were reattached.

Yes I've already consulted various different shops.

Dirk,

I strongly suggest that you take your car to Paul Veens from Car Care Soest. He has been looking after my Porsches for years. I have also heard that the guys from Renntech are very good with the 944/968 cars, although I have never had any business with them.

Good luck, and please let me know If I can be of any help.

The electrical problems have been solved!

Today we installed a replacement motor mount and found some loose items

xrad wins the prize for best diagnosis , the main ground wire between battery and block/ starter motor was not loose but off!

Further one of the three bolts between exhaust and manifold was missing and others were 'not tight', two brackets holding the exhaust were also loose.
The cover over the spark plug leads was also missing bolts.

A few days ago loose wires were found in the alarm/ immobiliser.

I've suggested the builder of the engine to pay me back the money (1300 euro) for the Motrinic and alarm repairs, he suggested 600 euro.
We will phone again on Friday.

Does he not pay, I'm going to claim all my expenses, including the 3 other shops that have been involved.

Regretfully he is not part of a trade organisation and because of this my legal insurance will only advise but with a total bill of some 1800 euro's I think a lawyer might be worth his money.

Hey Dirk, I'm glad you could get your car sorted out! It sounds like you finally found a thorough mechanic, who did you use?

Yesterday I have been promised a full refund of the 'repairs' to the alarm/immobiliser and the replacement Motronic.
And that was without any additional arguing from my side.

Now I still have to sort this vibration issue...

Maybe I'll see the shop recommended by Johannvb.
