Tailgate can not be open with the key
#1

Hello all,

Today, I was not able to open the tailgate with the key on my 968 (1993).

When I turn the key, nothing ! The motor is silent.

But it works perfectly with the release in the footwell.

So, I tested the contactor located behind the tailgate lock with a multimeter. It works.

Also I checked connectors (the one located near the contactor and the one located near the motor). Everything looks good.

FYI, find below voltages I got on the connector located near the contactor :

- On standby :

between blue/white and brown cables = 0 volt

between blue/white and red cables = +12 volts

- With key turned :

between blue/white and brown cables = -12 volts

between blue/white and red cables = 0 volt

Also, find below voltage I got on the connector located near the motor (unplugged for the test):

between blue/white and red cables = 12 volts then 0 volt when turning the key

between blue/white and red/white cables = 0 volts then 12 volts when pressing the release in the footwell.

I don't understand what's happens. It is a real mystery for me !

Is there someone who could compare voltages ?

I haven't looked at the wiring diagram yet but here are a few thoughts.

Brown will be ground so re-measure treating brown as common not blue-white.

As well I expect 3 conductors to the motor, ground (brown), footwell switch and rear tumbler switch.

After measuring with the right reference repost the results. Also, there should be no -12V so reverse the leads.

There has to be a bad path to ground from your rear key switch.

thanks all for feedback.

For unknow reason, it is working now without any modifications...

What is the microswitch ? Is it the contactor located behind the tailgate lock ?

Root cause could be the electrical tracks located in the electric motor...

having the same issue. I have had problems with the micro-switches on my sunroof from inactivity. the switch on the tailgate lock does not move far & possibly needs cleaned or replaced. problem is I think the rear bumper needs to be removed to access the switch. when my has acted up i turned the key the wrong way & flicked the key & it worked.

i vote for micro switch problem.

I watched as my mechanic replaced mine. If I recall correctly, the bumper remained in place and the switch was held in by 1 screw. He unscrewed it pulled it out until he found the connector, unconnected then reconnected and screwed it back in place and it has worked ever since. The whole process too him less than 10 minutes and cost me 100 bucks for something the I think I could do with relative ease.

Best of luck!
