Variocam not activating with Durametric
#1

Hi all,

I have a 92 968 and I was trying to verify that the variocam is activating correctly. Im looking for some troubleshooting advice.

- Ive hooked up the durametric to test it out. The activation for everything else works (injectors all activate etc) but for the variocam activation Im getting nothing.

- Ive checked voltage at the plug to the variocam - its 14 volts which does NOT change at any RPM and it also doesnt change when the durametric is trying to activate or stop the variocam.

Does anyone have either a hammer or durametric they they can check to see how their variocam responds when its activated/stopped? Or if the voltage drops off above 1500 rpms?

At this point Im trying to figure out if maybe variocam

Doesnt work if car is not moving?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Brad

The hammer tests certainly dont require the car to be moving

But the valve requires temperature and oil pressure to work

Ok thanks for confirming that. Im at a loss. The workshop manual details a 1 step testing procedure - see if battery voltage is present at the plug at idle. It doesnt have any steps after that. Ive confirmed battery voltage is present but it never goes away - since Variocam activates at around 1500 RPM I assumed that ot is constant energized and voltage would disappear at around 1500.

Its not de-energizing at any rpm though. Car is up to

temp and oil pressure appears fine.

Any ideas for troubleshooting would be welcome.
