Normal Idle Speed Variation?
#41

5/40 is a bit light for summer use - i would run at least 10/40 and if you have high heat, or plan to track the car, i would go with 15/50 or even 20/50

as for just below 2, that is likely due to bearing wear - it's quite normal at that mileage - the rebuild will fix that

I don't think oil weight has anything to do with the idle variation. I've had 15w50, 20w50 and 0w40 and saw no difference.

Flash, I found that if you go with a heavier weight oil, you'll get ticking noise from the lifters in cooler weather. Right now I'm running 0w40 and it's quiet, but with the 15 or 20 weights, I get the noise. We have track days in March and April coming up and I'm going to stick with the 0w40 weight, but haven't quite figured out what to do for the summer months, which can be pretty hot here in NJ. Probably, will move to 10w40 to see how it goes.

i wasn't referring to the oil weight having an effect on the idle, but rather the fluctuating oil pressure readings he referred to

my comments about heavier oil were for summer use

Hi gang,

Just a note to say that I gave her a brisk run on a hilly country road yesterday and she ran beautifully. I suspect I may have picked up some horses based only on the seat of the pants feel, but the idle variation was still there. Certainly isn't a problem, though! What an awesome ride...

I want to thank everyone who contributed to this thread. I've learned a lot. I'll keep tinkering around and perhaps stumble onto idle Nirvana.

Andy

I will be anxious to see how my car idles after I'm done with the rebuild. Although even if it does "fix" the problem, I'm not sure I'd recommend this to cure a little fluctuation in idle speed!
