New Gear Shifter
#1

Since I got the car a few months back, I have wanted to update the shifter. I wanted a classier/cleaner looking shifter and after looking around, I found one online. It was made in Germany and the website said all the right things (the shift pattern on the knob is even lit). The people were really nice and sent additional pictures and info and I decided to pull the trigger. Well, it arrived today and so far, so good. I am stoked to see and feel the quality. The knob is fairly heavy and seems like it will be just the right size & weight for what I want. I'm hoping to get it installed on the car in the next few days and I'll report back. It's always fun to see a new idea, project or product get completed for the 968's.

Looks very nice. If the mount works with the existing lever, this will be something that could start a trend.

Funny you should mention that. I was hoping you would show me the fastest way to change it? I'm wondering if I have to take off the entire console or just the boot. I think you'll like it a lot.

I was able to install it tonight. It has a rectangular hole and fits really loosely at first. It doesn't use any of the OEM rubber pieces inside. I ended up putting double sided tape (only 1 side peeled, thank you Flash) on the 2 sides of the shifter and then wrapped the whole stalk with electrical tape before putting the new shift boot on. The new boot went on nice and snugly and then is held in place with 2 set screws (1 on each side). The whole thing is very tight now and I am very happy with the fit, although I may try and shorten the shifter at some point. Maybe it's me but it seems to sit just a touch higher. I haven't driven it yet so I don't know if it rattles or buzzes. I'll check that out tomorrow.

I haven't had the chance to wire up the light inside that illuminates the shift pattern but I will tomorrow. I will post a couple of pictures when I finish it up.

Blu968, I purchased it from the following site, www.ict-schaltknauf.de

Looks nice. The fact that you say the knob is fairly heavy is a good sign, since some degree of weight appears to be essential to eliminate the buzz. I love the look of my 996 GT3 knob, but it's very light, so it originally buzzed like a swarm of crazed bees. Wrapping the shaft in heavy sound deadening material has helped, but hasn't eliminated the buzz. I hope yours does the trick.

That is the website I went with to get mine this past summer. Though I went with the model that showed a bit more metal....

Nice piece of work - very nice workmanship.

Quick update. I still have some work to do on the install. First off, I tried to tap into the wiring for the ashtray light and think I blew a fuse or something. It didn't work and when I tried to re-attach the ashtray light, it didn't work either. In looking through the fuse panel, I didn't see anything for an astray light and didn't have time to pull each fuse.

As for the feel of the new shifter, it is great. It feels more positively attached to the stalk for some reason. I can feel the notchiness (?) of the shift gate and I like it better. The bad thing is that I have to work on dampening the vibration a little. It's not that bad but it does have a high pitched slight buzz. I think this weekend I will take it back off and work with some silicone and modify some small rubber pieces.

I'll keep y'all posted. So far, it's a nice change and I'm sure I'll end up really liking the mod.

Any updates on adding this new gear shifter? Was thinking about going down this same road but wanted to see if you were able to eliminate the buzz and get the lights to work.

I bought this unit also from Germany, does look very smart, but I could not live with the 'buzz' the unit produced against the gear shaft, took it back off in the end, as I found a wayto refresh the OEM boot with a leather dye kit which has given the original a 'as new' look.

If anyone would like to make me an offer for the geman made unit?, I must admit I didn't try to cover the shaft with tape before fitting, so I could have 'cured' the buzzing if I had worked on it a little more.... However very pleased with the refreshed OEM gaitor boot now.

Can you tell me which unit you bought? There is an all black leather, and two with chrome bordering the shift pattern.

i still haven't had a chance to play with this - i need to replace mine, as it has some wear showing on it - i am inclined to do the lit one if it won't buzz - i may just have to buy one and find out, since it has been hard for travis to find time to pop by

I bought the black one, as shown in the top of this thread, it lights up on the top, with a Reddish glow, looks very cool!, connected it into the ash tray lamp supply.
