Introducing the new Design 1 Racing Tonneau cover
#1

It's finally here!!!

Porsche made Tonneau Covers for many of the Cabriolets, up through the 964, but stopped doing just in time for the S2. (lucky us) They still sell them for the earlier cars at a whopping $1300

Having driven convertibles for decades, I have enjoyed the benefits of a tonneau cover on many of them. In the cold weather I could unzip only the driver side, and run the heater and be toasty warm while having the top down. In addition, as all of us ragtop men know, the interiors or our car get beaten by the sun. Well, no more!

This cover does not require ANY drilling, cutting or modifying of anything. Simply remove 6 screws and replace with the fasteners (included), and you are good to go. It installs in minutes the first time, and seconds after that.

It is made of the same Sonnenland German Canvas as the original top, with StayFast acrylic binding

All fasteners provided are black powder coated

It comes complete with a black vinyl bag

It took a LOT more work than we had hoped, and a lot of extra fabric, but it's here and it works. At 50mph, windows down, there is almost no movement. At 70 it begins to flutter. Merely roll the windows up about 4 inches and it calms down. Roll them all the way up and it is very solid.

This still allows use of the windscreen

This will NOT fit with the Autopower or any other Roll bar

We had hoped to keep the price down under $600, but due to the extra straps and over a half yard of additional fabric needed, that became impossible. We still ended up at less than half what Porsche sells theirs for.

It is available in blue or black as standard (without cutouts for the Design 1 Racing Chassis Brace or harnesses) for $650 including shipping, shipped anywhere in the Continental US via UPS ground. Other shipping arrangements can be made at your expense. Contact me if you are going to pick it up

It is available with cutouts for the Design 1 Racing Chassis Brace and harnesses for an additional $25

Other colors are available as a special order - fabric prices keep changing, so contact me for details and pricing at the link on the top of the Index Page of this site

Credit cards will be accepted via paypal at the address via the link button (not my email addresses) There is a 3% charge for credit cards, so add $19.50

Paypal is available too, but it is a business account, so the same fees apply

Contact me for mailing address to pay by check

The headrest pockets on the prototype are to fit my seats. They are MUCH larger than the factory seats. The production units will fit much more snugly to the factory seats.

Here are some shots:

That's only part one, now there's the coupe. How about a tonneau sunroof cover so I can cover the top during day trips instead of lugging around a lashed 16 Kg. sunroof to my hatch carpet.

I use to think you had a day job.

Great work. I'm impressed. Don't recall hearing the pre-construction chatter on this one.

Excellent work my friend!

The ONLY thing I don't like is the way the edge pops up due to the door lock knob. I'm thinking a black plastic gromment would be a good addition. I found a couple of sources and actually ordered some smaller black plastic grommets with an ID of 0.5". Might do the trick but not sure if you could get the grommet close enough to the edge of the tonneau.

Wouldn't mind seeing a pic behind the brace bar to see how the "rear section" looks installed.

I'm pretty sure I am in for a black one... will confirm in an email to you later this weekend.

Thanks, as always, for your efforts to make wonderful products for our car!

(Now if you would only figure out a way to make the center console coin tray / cassette area into a cooled compartment for beverages and sandwiches....!)

Jim you really should get one in Speed Yellow. Can you imagine how striking that would look? Maybe a black racing stripe between the seats...

bio - i thought about that when i first saw the cover, before the straps were tensioned - i was thinking the same thing - then we tensioned everything

what you see in the pic as an "issue" is not what is actually going on - it only actually touches the lock button when the button is in the "UP" position, and does not push the cover up at all - when it is down, there is a gap - the straps that go toward the rear pull on the cover so that it is suspended - so, a grommet won't do anything but create a friction component or something to scratch something

speedster hump - funny you should say that - i have to make one when i do the race car - not going to be for a while though
