New Gear Shifter
#21

Just tried to mount this and found out that the short shifter I had previously installed is slightly thicker than the original. The new shift knob won't slide on. Checked it against the old shifter and it slides on perfectly. Just enough of a slight difference to cause a problem. I just pulled the shifter again and was going to try to file it down to size. Has anyone else run into this?

if it's the D1R short shifter, it's probably not the size, but rather the powder coating that is the problem

Does that mean a nice filing job over the entire surface could solve it?

it should - it's only a couple of thousandths of an inch thick

you could also just hit the inside of the shifter with soapy water or silicone spray - i'll bet it slides right on

Tried a bit of silicone on the shifter but will try adding it to the shift knob as well with a little filing to boot. The knob lights up red after hooking it to the ashtray wiring so can't wait to get it installed.

If the fit is that tight, it's going to be very difficult to fit any sound deadening material between the shaft and the shift knob, so it will probably buzz pretty badly. I hope I'm wrong, as that's a beautiful shifter...

I picked up something called liquid tape and plan to give that a try. It's for electrical wiring but I'm hoping that it acts as a bit of a lubricant at first and then provides some adhesive and helps with vibration.

i am pretty sure it's just a friction issue - the shifter was deliberately made to exactly the same dimensions, so the only difference should be the thickness and friction of the powder coating

but, the stock knob has rubber flexible inserts which would adjust for any differences - i have not yet been able to play with that particular knob enough yet to see what the difference would be - i saw it and played with it for minute, but was not thinking about it in relation to the short shifter

like i said, maybe travis can swing by this weekend and i can take a look - last time i heard, his was still out of the car, and i have a shifter floating around here.............

Completed the filing of the black powder coat - fits nicely now. Next step is to tackle the vibration. Not terrible but some coming through.

That looks great! Does the light in the shift knob only come on when the headlights are on?

We'll all be curious if you're able to come up with anything that cures the buzz. My GT3 shifter, which I also love the appearance of, still buzzes very annoyingly at essentially any rpm. I usually drive my car with the sunroof off, so I can't hear it, but we've had a cold snap in Central Texas lately, so the sunroof is on. Definitely not a pleasant sound. We're getting ready to put our house on the market, so I've been very busy getting it ready, which hasn't left me any time to work on the car, unfortunately. I'll sure be glad to be moved and settled into a new house, hopefully by sometime in the spring.

i've been thinking about that one for a long time but just never pulled the trigger - travis brought his over months ago, but we never got to play with it - i'll be interested to see how it works out - i am still thinking about it, as i need a new knob one way or another

The shifter lights up when the lights are turned on. Here's a couple of shots (sorry for the blurry pics).

I ordered 1 of these and it looks Awesome, going to install it tomorrow. Will update on the vibration situation.

Replaced door handle and mirror black seals today, looks great.
Really needed them, they were starting to crack.

Installed the shift handle today, looks great however getting buzzing noise around 2K RPM.
Tried everything to dampen the sound, then realized it was not coming from the shifter. Its coming from the long rod that shifts the transmission and vibrates through the knob. I completely took it all apart again and to see if there was anything I could do to the rod but really cant. Jacked the car up and followed the rod to the transmission and then it disappears into it, so couldn't do anything there either.

Well I have tried everything I could, Has anybody fixed this problem???

add a spring shim to the end of the pin beneath the clip?
