I decided to start a new topic on my carpet replacement. Some of the things already discussed from another post was that I am in touch with Bob of 928Leathershop. Bob and I live very close to one another so the other day I brrought the 968 over to his shop and we discussed replacing the carpet. Since as far as I know, 968 carpet is not specifically available, he will consider using my carpet as the template. hopefully, it will become available to everyone, but that is up to Bob.
As in the other post, I felt that German velour that he used was the best of his carpet choices for my car. It is a plush cut pile with backing. It is fairly flexible and should contour nicely. More difficult contours will have to be stiched at Bob's shop. He felt the carpet was fairly close to the 944.
I decided to leave off the door pockets as most of the screw holes were badly damaged. I will fashion new fiberglass surrounds and cover them with carpet and new speaker grills.
The speakers were old so they have been removed. I will install some new ones before replacing the carpet.
As for carpet removal, two words: BE PREPARED!
Be prepared for a tough job requiring many hours. In most places the carpet is held fast by a super sticky flexible glue. If the carpet should fall back into place or get folded on itself, you will have to unstick it all over again.
Besides that, it is otherwise a simple procedure.
My order for the coupe(have a good sized container for all the clips and screws):
1) remove door pockets (just screws all around)
2) remove all floormats and vacuum
3) slide front seats all the way back and remove front allen screws. slide seats all the way forward and remove all the back allen screws. Tilt seats toward center armrest and unplug the electrical connections. remove front seats from car. Remove the center console change box, ash tray and screws holding center console. remove stick shift knob, mine came off by pulling stright up. remove all this stuff
4) remove trunk carpet mat (heavy one with foam) you will expose the clips which retain the lower portion of the rear seat vinyl. Flat tipped screw driver to drive them towards the rear bumper.
5) with patience and great effort, seperate the front bottom edge of the l;ower portion of the rear seat from the sheet metal and floor carpet. Only the front edge is really glued well. A large flat crowbar allows constant upward pressure while you get a thin blade knife in the cut the glue. Takes time. Don' cut the seat. Once the front edge is free, the bottom portion lifts up and out.
6) you have now exposed the mount screws for the fold down seats(middle ones under center cover). Before taking them out, it may be easier to remove the rear seat covering carpet. Go slowly as there are many clips holding the carpet as well as the vinyl covers.
7) with the rear seat out, you can pop the screw covers for the rear side panels. there are also several hidden connectors so go slowly. you will have to remove the seat belt and door surrounds as well.
8) once the rear side panels are out, you can remove the rear side carpet.
9) now the whole rear end is done and you can start on the front. remove the black plastic threshold covers first (front to rear, metal clips again)
10) slowly remove front corner carpet pieces and the the three main front and mid carpet sections.
good time to check wiring and speakers and such. may want to plan ahead for sound deadening material if you don't mind the weight.
