New Bigger than M030 Swaybars
#1

ok, so clearly i've been a busy boy - we all know i'm nuts and htink the 968 in standard trim is a heavy mushy car - even in M030 setup i found it lacking - i loved the car though and was not willing to give up

in working out my suspension, i ran into anomolies with this car that were counter to basic suspension design guidelines - typically you spring a car first, and then tweak with swaybars, and then fine tune with shocks - this car is a bit different and more fickle though, and has been quite the challenge - it's been frustrating along the way, but in the end it has paid off

after many attempts at this standard course, i determined that the amount of body roll and suspension variance, which i found completely unacceptable, was not going be corrected through spring upgrade alone

i kept increasing springs rates to firm things up (by the way, i have a cabinet full of springs i'll let go cheap) - ultimately i tried heavy springs, and while the car was well planted on the track, on the street it was a nightmare - the struts would not handle the 400# springs and remain compliant, and the single adjustable rear shocks could not handle the 600# springs for the same reason - if i got it to be firm enough to corner well, it was abusive - if i got it smooth enough to be tolerable, it felt mushy in the corners - the lean was too much for me either way

so, back to the drawing board i went - i had to find a compromise in ride quality while still limiting the body roll - the problem was in the sway bars - the only things out there were the M030 bars, and the Tarret and Weltmester bars - the former were already on the car, and still too soft - the latter were expensive and i thought i could do better in design for my application - all that adjustability is great, but not simple to dial in, and i just didn't want to spend that much time at the track doing it - this was a street car after all

i then dropped my front spring rate to 300# and the rear to 500# - i changed the rear shocks to dual adjustable fluid (gas was too jittery for the rear)

after playing around with the math a bit, i finally came up with a swaybar setup that works - the front bar is a 31.75mm hollow bar, with heim joint end links, delrin center bushings, and welded collars to keep it centered - the rear bar is a 22.25mm solid bar with adaptor plates and grooved polyurethane bushings with zirc fittings - both bars fit right in with no clearance issues

the results were nothing short of amazing - this was what i was looking for - i finally have a car that i feel i can toss into a corner at any speed and know exactly what it is going to do, and no more lean!

this is not for the daily driver - spring upgrades are a must - so are shock and strut upgrades - the bars are too stiff for the stock setup, and would result in issues at the limits - they would feel great around town, but if you pushed it, you would easily have understter/oversteer problems - at an absolute minimum, you would need konis all around, and at least 250# springs up front and an additional 100# of wheel rate in the rear - a strut tower brace would be a must as well

i have not finished the pricing yet, but i expect to right in between the M030 and the Tarret or Weltmeister

these bars will be available soon, exclusively through RS Barn

here are some pics of the prototypes - i am making some slight changes in the next version, but the production models will be nearly the same:

Hey Anchorman,

I just put Mo30 Sways on my car. You can have Serial number 0001 on these...

I'm with Jay on this one. Bob told me about these right after I got the M030 on.

I put M030 on before you did - maybe they're starting to wear out?

Nice...

Just an observation, it's too bad the front bar doesn't mount above the a-arm. The heim joint [w/o some sheild or cover] will be exposed to water and dirt which will shorten it's life. I suppose they can be cleaned an lubed regularly.

Also did you end-up adding another truss to the front/center support? It flexs with the M030 bar.

the heims i chose are designed for this duty - self lubricating - no room above anyway - geometry interference

yes, i designed another brace - that will be available too - no flex at all now

Hey Flash,

Do you have new comments after testing your big sways for some months ?

Are you planning this stuff to be available via RS Barn (like you did with your uppe and bottom brace) ?

Do you have some price-indications in comparison with the complete Pelican M030-sways kit ?

My 968 cab 1994 still have the original suspension set-up (non M030). Lager sway-bars and KW-V3 struts are on top of my mods-list.

Alwys thinking at some nice technical evolutions, .....

i love them - everybody that has been in the car has been impressed with how planted it feels and those who have driven it have said that the car wants to go as fast as you can push it

yes, i plan to make them available through rs barn, if and when the demand justifies making them - right now i have the only set

pricing will be higher than the M030 kit from sunset (don't know what pelican gets for it) - the kit is a LOT more involved - i have to make delrin bushings for the front, include heim joints, welding, and add another brace - the rear has to have an entirely new bushing assembly - the whole thing bolts up to the factory locations, but needs new bushing kits and such to get there - i haven't really sat down to figure out pricing yet, partly due to not knowing how many i would make in a batch

the bottom line though is that these would NOT be used on a car that did not have chassis bracing and stiffer springs, as well as at least 17s - they are great if the car is set up for them, but they would be a mess on a soft car

Good stuff as always, Flash. I'd be interested in your heavier sway bars, and appreciate your disclaimer that they are only to be used in conjunction with the right (read stiffer) springs and shocks. But for now, I'm in the mode of keeping my suspension and tires unmodified while I continue to ramp up the DE learning curve, and as such, my next major mods will probably be a roll cage, grippier seats, and harness, which will blow the 968 budget for awhile. Love your SS clutch line and lower suspemsion brace, though.

On a related note, my car came with the M030 bars, and stiffer-than-stock springs and shocks, and yet, while I have a far-from-well-calibrated butt-o-meter, to me, the car sways like a bass boat stuck in the middle of a Sea World water ski exhibition. I can only imagine what a 968 with stock bars must feel like...

fox - M030 for you

my bars are only for cars with at least 300# springs up front and similar net rates in the rear, and at least 17" stock width rims - installation on a car with stock or near stock springs, or 16" rims, or narrower than stock 17" rims is dangerous and i would rather not deal with it - we will not be selling them under those conditions - i am considering a program whereby they can only be installed by an authorized center, so that such safety precautions can be taken

i have oem 18" Turbo Twist hollow spokes, which springs would you recommend that i upgrade to if i wanted to use your sway bars, and what would you recommend for the rear?

well, the konis will only handle about 300# without serious degradation to ride quality - the single adjustment valave is very limited - that's my problem right now - i need to change to the 8012 to get any more spring rate up there

2 ways to get there with the rear - you need a net rate of about 310#/in

opition a - the rear konis would have to go altogether and install a coilover to get your spring rate up - i recommend a non-gas dual adjustable shock in the rear - gas shocks with stiff springs and swaybars tend to make the rear end bump steer a lot

option b, which is going to be less civilized, but a whole lot easier, is to swap out your stock torsion bars with 30mm solid torsion bars - then you can keep the konis (though i still recommend a non-gas dual adjustable shock)

As always, thanks for sharing the benefits of your research, flash.

I'm looking for some springs and sway bars, just some modest upgrades from stock. If anyone is selling their stuff to upgrade to these, please shoot me a PM.

OK Flash those new (old now) bars of yours are just plain wimpy.

I just saw the size of the bar from a Firehawk, I'm not sure I could even lift it, it looked so huge. Wish I had my camera this weekend.

Flash,

Just check ur pic with the front bar (installed). Do I see a different under

car tray (front section under the bumper covering to radiator)?

lol - yes - it is a one piece splitter/undertray - as far as i know, there are only 2 in existence like it - custom modified - very time intensive, but resolves the snagging issues of the PU unit, and cleans up the lines and airflow
