Need to replace my shifter bushing(s)

Need to replace my shifter bushings, have the bottom cup and the 2 side bushings. Is there a link to a description to how to replace these?

I've done this, but a search didn't turn up the info. It's really quite a simple and straightforward job - just doing the logical dismantling gets you where you need to be. What I found the most difficult part was looking at the car when the console and shifter were out - I found that disconcerting. Here's the only photo I have.

the trickiest part is installing the new lower bushing without cracking it - i broke 2 of them until i figured out the trick - you can't bang on it without that risk - a very heavy grease does a good job of helping things along



then of course you have to adjust it correctly at the 85 degree angle when finished



just give me a call - we can handle this very quickly over here - besides, if you break the lower bushing, you'll be stranded - fortunately i have a couple of extras

Yes, getting that lower bushing on was a little nerveracking - and I didn't have either a spare bushing or another form of transportation. Placing the shift rod squarely on the bushing and rapping sharply with a small sledge hammer did the trick.

did that first time too - shattered the bushing - then i placed the base on something soft - did it again - after adding the grease, i could just push it down and it was home - third time was charm

SoCalKen - as I'd said, it scared me, too. But - it looks MUCH worse than it is. You can do it, but if you're going to get Flash's assistance, I'm sure it will be uneventful. It's really a much simpler job than it appears to be.

I replaced the cup bushing about a year ago. I had ordered an extra in case I cracked one, but didn't need it. I put the lever and bushing on top of my wooden workbench surface, used a little grease, and smacked it with a rubber mallet until it went in. I think as long as you don't use excessive force, it should be ok. Then again maybe I just got lucky.

I did mine as well a couple of weeks ago, really nothing to it, just took all things around it to work with more clearence, like console, shift, etc.., as for the install, i just put heavy grease on it, then aplly constant pressure on the bushing, dont bang on the shift its really soft metal, and assemble it outside the car.

I'm replacing my shifter and stick with an after market one. When I removed the old stick and rubber boot I can see the plastic insert in the shifter bearing bracket is broken (cracked). Is this what you are referring to as the bushing?



I called a couple of Porsche dealers and they don't have the part in stock but can order the shifter bearing bracket (w/screws) and have it expressed mailed to me by Monday.



I thought about gluing and re-using the original "bushing" but express mailing the whole assembly only cost $37 total. Do you guys have any recommendation or suggestions?

Take a good look at the lever pin that protrudes through the shift rod while you're in there. If they are like the 944 unit, they wear and place strain on the circlip holding the shift rod onto the lever.



Then, the bloody thing just pops out and falls into a hole while you're driving home from the airport on a Friday, wearing a nice suit and tie, and fishing for any gears at all.

The bushing that's discussed is a plastic cup-like piece that the ball at the bottom end of the shift lever sits in. There are also plastic sleeve "bearings" on the extension bars of the lever that should be changed at the same time.

I once compiled a list of parts for shifter maintenance - but PET won't work on my computer anymore... could someone verify that this would be the list? I think included here are the cup-bearings along the control linkage to the tranny. If someone could vet this then I'll order the whole package. Maybe the parts list can help others, too.

What are the symptoms of worn shifter bushings? Is it just something that should be done after a certain number of miles, or are there specific symptoms that trigger the need to replace the bushings? Thanks.

Reason I'm asking is because my son called yesterday(180 miles away with the car) and said the shifter suddenly became very loose and vague. He said that the shifter throw is longer and seemed to have moved to the rear of the car. 1st, 3rd and 5th seem ok but 2nd, 4th and 6th seem to bottom out before engaging. I am ordering the cup bushings thinking this is the problem without physically looking at it.

Took the 180 mile trip today and fixed once again. Surprisingly it was the circlip on the rear pivot linkage slipped out of the groove. The kid must have been banging gears.Simple fix but very tight area to work in.
