Need a Qualified Shop
#1

Getting my new ride baselined in AZ, but once I bring it to SoCal I don't really want to have to drive it through the bugs of Yuma every time I need some work done. Any good shops in SD or Orange Counties?

Thanks

Found one.

Have not experienced them in the flesh yet but I spoke with Martin (owner) and he seems to know the car. Says he has about 10 968's in his customer base. I'll post my experience with them when I have some.

Thanks Roland for the lead!!

Yes, like Joe said, All German had serviced my 968 maybe 3-4 times. They are professional, kind of like the respectful treatment we expect! Martin speaks with a European accent, he may have been factory trained, or something like that, he may have raced as well. They seem to know the 968s well, and have been very creative with repairs where I've wanted something besides the standard "service book" line items. I don't think their labor rate is the cheapest, but I'd trade that any day over someone who doesn't know the car. And of course for me they are very close to home. It is a "dealer level" shop without the hassles of the dealer, for example they tend to have things like Speedsters in the front lobby, spotless facilities, wash the car each time before they give it back, etc.

PS: My prejudice about Porsche dealers is they prefer to do $950 oil changes on brand new P-Cars and seem to choke when I bring one of my classics (which of course are significantly classic only in my mind!!!!!)

Where in San Diego are you? I live in Chula Vista and going to Escondido is nearly an hour drive and I kind of doubt that that shop would give me a lift home. I have used three different shops farther south for Porsche service. They all seem to know each other's operations.

I no longer use one shop, Dieter's, they were indifferent to working on the 968, although eager to work on the 944. Another 968 owner had problems with their work; I was lucky they didn't want my business. Black Forest did the head gasket and a couple of other minor repairs, slight discount on parts, reasonable labor hours. Lately I have taken the car to Scott's Porsche Service in chula vista as it is the closest to work and home. Small shop, has been very aggressive in matching discounted parts prices, was over $200 cheaper on the damper for the 968 when it failed. Probably the best prices for Porsche parts in the area if you do your own wrenching.

Hi Sp4149,

I used Black Forest for my 911 (mostly) they were good, and really know these cars. I am sure they can handle your 968, I turned away from them for a couple reasons, one is (I can't prove anything), but I am sure they messed up one repair, and sometimes if a client gets a suspicion about something, even if it is wrong, it still doesn't feel right to go there, and the 2nd reason is the location is pretty far away.

The PO of my 968 always used "Automotive Excellence" in Sorrento Valley. I haven't tried them, but I think they do all the high end La Jolla cars as well. For the PO, I know they made one mistake on my 968 which is to install the wrong motor mounts. My 968 has the tiptronic which uses different motor mounts than the 6 speed. This is a simple mistake that anyone could have made; on the other hand it does suggest that somebody didn't check something sufficiently and probably assumed that they all use the same mounts. So you might want to give this place a try some day.
