A Bit of Fun in the Shop Today
#1

Hello all,

Long day in the office, so time for a fun project in the shop tonight. Not a sale-able item, but maybe it'll make a great 968forums award at the next black-tie ceremony. [Image: wink.gif] If you're the easily bored type, just skip to the third one, but the first two show how it's made which I always find interesting...

Well, thanks for trying. I just played all three, and as far as I can tell, they're hosted and available on YouTube. Did you get a more specific error message?

Looks great no problem playing. Seems to me there might be a market here. No idea of cost, but that is something I would like. Was that on a piece of wood? By the way, great machine!

Yes, that's a beautiful piece, that I'm sure many would love to own if it were for sale. I had no problem viewing the videos, by the way.

Thanks for the kudos, guys. [Image: smile.gif]

Yes that was on a piece of walnut 1" thick, it's really great stuff to work with, and this piece happened to be a recycled stair tread believe it or not. The CNC machine is one I built myself a few winters ago (because I had no P-car to work on)!

I thought it was safe to post these videos because the item isn't salable - as that is against the forum rules. I believe Porsche guards their logo and branding jealously, as they should, however it would make a good gift or "award" for special Porsche-related occasions. I wonder if providing it at cost as "art" would be a no-no? I'm not averse to machining a bunch of them as a favor, it doesn't take much time as you can see. Any text (or no text) could go at the bottom, in any font you can imagine.

The yellow "stuff" is paint mask that the machine carves through, and I've already painted it black and "weeded" the mask off so the walnut shows through, then applied a final coat of clear finish. I'll try to post a picture.

I certainly do not want to cross unintended lines in this thread. That said, a non profit could purchase these at cost from you( your donation) and the non profit could either sell or auction them to raise money for their charitable purposes. Not sure of the logo issues and again, just speaking off the top of my head. I still think what you tooled looks super!

There's probably more ways to get in trouble than not [Image: wink.gif] If forum friends have a need, I'd be glad to provide them if it can be done in a forum- and brand-compliant way. I certainly don't want to get in trouble on the forum as I hope to be here a long time, and I don't want to get a "cease and desist" letter from Porsche either. [Image: ohmy.gif]

Good point about the logo concern - you definitely don't want a team of Porsche lawyers breathing down your neck. I wonder if an agreement to stop making these plaques on the condition that Porsche fix everyone's pinion bearings for free (including retroactively reimbursing those who have already paid to have it done) would work [Image: biggrin.gif]. Yeah, that's the ticket...

Just for conversation, because I do not know the answer to this question, could the logo you post on your pic tamathumper already be a logo problem? Is there a solution to this issue or are we up da crick without the proverbial paddle?

Doh! I don't know... See, I'm probably in trouble already. [Image: ohmy.gif]

Here's the finished product [Image: smile.gif] I'd better hide it somewhere in the barn!

Yes, that is really beautiful. I am so envious of people with artistic skills, since I have zero. Any lawyers with experience in trademark law out there?

Maybe you should hold out for the 4-foot tall one. That'd be a fun weekend project too. [Image: smile.gif]

This'd be a good excuse to have a get-together here in the NorthEast - everyone could have a hand in making their own copy for free on the CNC machine, then maybe it would be more kosher. [Image: wink.gif]

Agreed. Are you coming to the swap in Hershey or Newton?

I hadn't thought about it - should I check the event calendar for the dates and times?

You guys on the coasts have all the fun [Image: sad.gif]

Edit: But here in Austin, we have Driveway Austin, a school for race drivers, or Heaven On Earth, as I like to refer to it. Plus a very affordable country club type track nearby, and a Formula One track coming in soon, so I shouldn't complain. Just a severe dearth of 968 owners...

I found the PCA Swap in Hershey online and I already sent a message to my Boxster-owning buddy about driving down to attend, but I don't see anything about a swap in Newton? Do you mean Newton, PA, or Newtown, or?

Oh, and I didn't miss the opportunity to ask him to bring along the matching picnic basket for his hairdresser's car. [Image: laugh.gif]
