Bad pedal after M030 upgrade
#1

OK, I needed new pads & rotors for my 94 cab so I decided to upgrade to M030 front calipers and disks. The car stopped pretty well, with good pedal feel, but clearly it needed a good flushing and bleeding so I decided to go whole hog. I bought the car last April and hope to start doing DEs next season so I figured I'd make the change. I understand I really didn't need to change them but it also gave me the opportunity to paint the new (used but in good shape) calipers red before installation. I also wanted to install braided ss brake lines, and a 5/33 proportioning valve at the same time.

I bought the F&R M030 calipers and front cross-drilled disks from a dismantler and they were in great shape. The pads that came with the calipers were like brand new as were the disks. I think the pads are OEM but not sure. I ordered new cross-drilled cryo StopTech disks for the rear. I disassembled the front calipers before painting and they were in great shape except the vibration dampers were stuck inside the pistons on three of the four sides. These were the kind that are weights that fit inside the piston hollows connected together by thin shims behind the pads. I was able to get some out but needed to buy 4 new pistons, 2 large & 2 small. The bores were immaculate and the rebuild & painting went well. I didn't rebuild the rears as they were in great shape with no damber issues.

I started the install and immediately couldn't get the caliper mounting bolts to budge. I became chicken, gave up and took it to a local Porsche specialist for the install. He's usually very good but quite expensive. He and his assistant both have 944/944S2 and 968 experience. They performed the install while we were on a 10 day Cali vacation. Well, even then it wasn't ready upon our return. It took another 2 days to pick it up. I was a bit annoyed.

I should have been concerned. When I went to pick it up the pedal felt like crap. Way too long travel and a spongy feel. They stated that they bled the brakes twice. They also made a small adjustment to the master to try to improve the pedal travel. They suggested that I needed to bed the pads in and then it should be OK, but bring it back if it doesn't get better. Well, I bedded the brakes over 2 evenings and still no, or at least marginal, improvement. Today I tried to brake hard enough to engage the anti-lock to try to get the air, if any, out of that system. I couldn't get them to trigger the anti-lock. The overall braking now is far worse than when I started.

Clearly I will bring it back since I was charged way too much but I need some thoughts to at least provide some guidance to the guys. What directions should I provide the shop to hopefully get this thing right?

make sure they used a motive power bleeder, and did not do it by vacuum or the pedal pushing method

some have the same effect over here with the M030 upgrade, crappy long pedal and no feel, don't think the two concerned have found a solution yet

found this....

However having just picked up my car from EMC who all they did was fit Mintex F6R pads and change the fluid....... i don't seem to have the extra pedal travel anymore...... i'll check with EMC but don't believe they did anything extra.

Yes I'd love to know because I'm thinking of upgrading off season.

OK, perhaps I was stupid.  When I bought the used M030 calipers they came with pads that looked almost new.  The pads were all black without any visible markings so I figured they were probably OEMs so I had them installed with the calipers after I painted them.

Well, when the new brakes didn't feel right I decided to eliminate all doubt and ordered a new set of Porterfield R4-S pads.  I installed the new pads this weekend and then bled them again using my Motive power bleeder.  Not much air seemed to come out.  I drove the car a little bit earlier in the week and they were much better.  The pedal was much harder and the stopping greatly improved.  I finally got to bed them in last night and now they rock.  A good firm pedal with strong braking power.  This is what I expected them to feel like from the beginning!

With the fresh red paint and the cross-drilled rotors they look the part too.
