so far, no D1 bypass instructions - plenty on the D3 though - i'm wondering if the D3 just doesn't have some of the features of the D1 and Z2, thereby allowing the bypass

From what I undestand from talking to some car stereo tech guys, the D3 is a totally different unit from D1. The bypass fix for the D3 works only on the D3. The fix is basically moving one pin to different location and grounding it with the brake wire. There are some ebayers that sells the modified harness but it is a simple mod. There are no face plate or kit for the 968. The double din install is a custom job but very simple enough for anyone to do. The D3 does not come with a faceplate but comes with a template that you can use to create one. The D1 comes with a face plate.

yeah - that's the part that doesn't amke sense - the pins have nothing to do with the accelerometers, and only tie to the parking brake - i already have that mod, and it does allow some operations, but not all - if you are moving, you cannot program

anyway, i bought some kits - we'll see what happens

Just installed a used D2 today that I picked up on eBay for $320. I don't have much of anything to add to this conversation other than those avic units sure do look at home in the radio socket. I did the grounded parking break mod and it works well, but I didn't attach the accelerometer.

Do you guys think that a licence plate backup camera would be feasible considering the height of our licence plate frames?

Also do you think there is a way to run the wiring from the camera whereby avoiding having to cut into the bumper, are there any factory holes in that area? I don't have my car closeby to inspect myself.

Here is the camera I was looking at

Hey Flash do you think there is any way to run the wiring without having to cut the bumper cover?

If I were to install a back up camera, I would put it in the trunk keyhole. This would mean losing the ability to open the trunk with a key. Since I have a keyless entry system, It would not matter much. I think this is the best location to put a back up camera.

Stupid question but does the 968 have a VSS wire (vehicle speed sensor) ? If so where is it located?

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/ISEO-rgb...on_install.html

I think this is useful for allowing a system to be more accurate? Also is it need in order to use the Avic's Vehicle Dynamic Displays VDD?

I think you can use the signal sent by the ABS sensor.
That certainly is a very neat installation. I received a Garmin NUVI 350 for my birthday (June 21). I never thought I would like it but have used it several times and it is great. Very accurate to my amazement. I like the portability. I thought it might be too distracting but with that feminine voice telling me where to go it allows me to keep my eyes on the road. My wife is jealous as it was her voice that told me where to go. Now I only have it at the house. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Looking forward to using it on our trip to Italy in the fall. That will be the true test. Also just as an aside my Aventurine Green baby turned 100K miles this week.
You will love it in Italy! My wife and I used our Nuvi 670 in Italy and Germany this last June, and the thing was spot-on. It slaughters the street name pronunciations (which was a source of great amusement), but it gets you where you want to go better than anything I have ever seen..... got us from the Florence airport, to a small town named Feltre in the Dolomites above Venice, to Venice itself, and then back to the Florence airport. Then, for our extended lay-over in Germany, it took us to my uncle's house flawlessly. In fact, the 670 comes with the traffic sensing re-route function, which is a pay service in the US, but is free to use in Europe (only works in major metropolitan areas). Turned out it was invaluable! Within minutes of getting on the A3 autobahn outside the Frankfurt airport, the thing said "Severe traffic ahead, recalculating" and then took us on side roads all the way to Erlangen (outside Nuremberg). Periodically we could see the autobahn from the side roads.... and it was a complete parking lot the entire way. The Nuvi saved us about 3-4 hours of travel time after an already long day. What a relief! No more arguing with the spouse about which way to go, reading nutty maps, dealing with screwy roundabouts and roads with no names visible whatsoever.... just smooth driving and enjoying the view. Heck, even if you miss a turn that the thing wants you to take... who cares! It just finds the next best route (we missed a turn on the Autostrada in Bologna, and the Nuvi re-routed us through Modena without a hiccup). What a marriage saver (our nickname for the thing)!

The bottom line: We learned to NEVER second guess the GPS lady!

Have fun in Italy!

S4, I'm looking forward to using it in Italy. This will be my 4th trip to Italy and the driving has always been an adventure. Great to hear it works so well. The problem is always going the last mile, in the city (citta). I certainly will believe it is a marriage saver. As my wife and I have some "trying" moments in Italia and Sicilia (grandparents home). If you were in Modena, you should have stopped at the Ferrari factory, I hope to do that as we will be staying in Bologna for 4 days. The SIMM I got was for all of Europe and our next trip will be back to Germany. Thanks for the update.

Just got the avic-d2 ebay special installed. Looks nice with my newly replaced shift boot. Much nicer than the el-cheapo after market head unit the PO left for me. I also added the XM module and dropped it back in the hatch.

Thanks for the compliment and for the incentive to give this a try. I am not much of an iPod guy, so the D3 wasn't as critical to me. But I know the interface on the D2's is definitely lacking if you are looking for iPod control through head unit.
