can you use the vicinity search features and such while playing a cd?
That is a good question, I looked it up on the manual but could not find the answer, I am going to have to give that a shot today.

I was wondering how you handled the wiring aspect. Did you splice into the 968 wiring? Did you get a harness for splice-free connection? I just got a used D2 and am getting ready to install.

I spliced the factory wiring to the D3 harness. Although you can by a harness for about $15.00 but I dont plan on ever replacing the unit.

I ask because I was looking for a harness, like a metra harness or something, for the 968. I have had no luck. As it happens, it is pointless anyway. The PO spliced into the factory wiring. So guess my decision is easy!

Your install looks nice BTW. I am stealing your idea of using the metal strips as a makeshift rail.

This maybe old news but it looks like Nav Systems are very vulnerable to theft. I have the Garmin 350 (portable) and will make sure it is either locked in the glove box or on my person. Apparently thieves look for the tell rings from the suction cup on the windshield, so the cops are recommending wiping the rings off.

Now wondering about those built systems. They don't seem to be hidden from view. Any worries?

valid concern, and i have had my cars broken into in the past, and stereos stolen, but personally i just finally said to myself "that's what insurance is for"

when it happened in one of the BMWs, it paid for everything, including the damage to my rear seat where they messed up the leather stepping over my trunk (also fixed) and into the car (top was down)

sure it's a major hassle, but worth it to me to have what i wanted in the car, instead of just something that nobody would steal

the piece of mind of knowing that if anything happens it can be handled is well worth the premiums to me

If it is going to happen, it's gonna happen, like flash said, that is why we have insurance and pay a premium for it. I try to mitigate the chances by putting something to cover it when the car is parked for a long period of time.

I will have to check with my insurance company (State Farm) to make sure the Garmin is covered. Maybe

some of our member gurus can chime in. I guess I would do everything I can to avoid the hassle of broken windows and ripped out electronics (built in radar detector). Just thought what would make a great new innovation to nav systems: how about having the radar detedtor built in. The less number of devices the better and the police (VA) could not tell if you had a detector. As an aside I'm headed to Italy in October and planning on taking the Garmin with me. Anything to help figure out where "the f*&k are we" should be a help in Italia. It also has a translator, so when my Italian falters, I can turn on the Garmin. Mia Garmin parli Italiano, si.

a great idea, and i would personally love it - i seem to remember a unit about 20 years ago that did that - i hate a bunch of gadgets and cords all over the place - however there are "detector detectors" out there in use now in those states that prohibit the use of detectors, so it isn't just a visual thing - not sure how effective they are though

Virginia is one of those states. Not all jursidictions have the detector detector. The State Police to my knowledge do not have them at least not the ones I've seen and my detector is always on. The new thing fo VA is hugh fines for "abusive driving" including 20+ over the speed limit. The fine $1000 over 3 years. It is being challenged in the courts as it only applies to VA residents. My thoughts are that with Garmin set up it would look like a radar detector and I might get stopped and then spot my real detector. What's a fella to do? Watch my speed? or get lost? take my wife along for navigation? the old fashion maps? just sit a home and fantasize about driving my 968 along the AutoBahn at 140 - 150 mph. Actually, I'v done that with a 944 but at 120-130.

yeah - we have had the "20 over = reckless driving" law on the books for a long time now - it's a misdemeanor that can mean real jail time - they even have the authority to impound your car - neither one is applied very often, but the laws are on the books

Hi.

Is there a double din installation kit on the market for the 968? I was thinking about buying this unit, Bestbuy has it, and am wondering if they would be capabe of doing the install in my car for this double din unit. Would they have a faceplate/kit to go around the unit?

Also for a 968 specific installation is there a way to prevent lockout of some of the features will driving. I would like to be able to bypass these issues if possible.

Thanks

to my knowledge there is no "kit" to do this, and is a custom installation

the unit has mostly non-passable features - there is no way to make nav entry changes while moving (though you can move the map around and search for some specific local things) - you can bypass the parking brake, allowing you to at least make entries without having to set the brake, but the accellerometers and their programming prevent you from fiddling while moving - this is for safety, and while annoying on long trips, is the best setup

on the D3, did we ever find out whether or not you could actually use the nav at all while playing a cd or mp3? - it is my understanding that you cannot make any entries without the nav disk installed - that was the entire reason i did not purchase it for the E46, and went with the Z2 instead - i have subsequently found a number of other features that put the Z2 ahead of the D3, and am now glad i did it, but am still curious about this one operational limitation, as i do not think the Z2 will work in the 968, due to the sliding front face hitting the shifter

Bob,

I have been trying to get a NAV system on ebay at a good price.

Here is something that allows FULL control while in motion.

PIONEER AVIC D3 D2 D1 DVD Nav LOCKOUT Override bypass

Item number: 170136725294

"Do you have a Pioneer AVIC- D1/D2/D3 and

want the DVD / Nav to work while in motion??

I am selling all the hardware needed to bypass your AVIC D1, D2, D3.

This will allow the video to play while driving. As well as all Nav functions can be accessed while driving.

This Auction will provide you with the way to:

*

PERMINANTLEY make the DVD play

while the car is in motion.

*

PERMINANTLY make the Navigation unit

programmable while the car is in motion."

i'm skeptical that it would work, due to the accelerometers not being externally accessible, but i'll give it a go - what the heck - they are cheap enough that i am not worried about the money lost if it doesn't work - i just ordered one for the D1 and for the Z2

The feedback from past sales claims that it in fact does what it says.

If it does not work as described, let the forum know.

will do - should get it in the next day or two

my concern is that if somehow it bypasses the accelerometer, i might lose some of my tracking functions (like the built in speedo or g-meter)

we'll see

Does anyone know of any 944/968 dash trim kits on the market, or info on having had a custom one done?

Thanks.

After reading the guys auction, it appears that there is a pin or pins that he bypasses or shorts to fool the unit. If that is the case, and you loose speedo/g-meter functions, you could always use a miniature DPDT toggle switch to return to stock...maybe a stock switch re purposed in the center console????
