I finally got around to installing the Pioneer Avic D3 on the car. It's a pretty straight forward install with minimal modification. The only thing is that you have to fabricate new brackets to hold the unit in place and a trim plate as the unit does not come with one.             [attachment=4181:attachm

I bought the unit on Ebay for $685.00. It is the Pioneer AVIC D3. It is a very simple job and it took me less than an hour for the install, but I have been installing car systems on my own for a while now. I would say give it about an hour to two hours max for the average person to complete the install. It is very straight forward and I would rate it a 3 on the DIY scale.

To be honest, I'm surprised that you could do this.

A few months ago I was planning on doing the exact same thing.

Even though AVIC D3 has smaller dimensions than AVIC Z2 (HDD GPS),

my measurement showed that I'd have a clearance problem with the left lower brace for the center console.

Maybe I was wrong, maybe it's just the Cab thing (mine is '94).

So, this is what I ended up doing:

JVC KD-NX5000 in 968 Cab



Nonetheless, I'm envious !

The lower brace which supported the single din unit was removed resulting in plenty of space for any double din unit. I chose the pioneer specifically for the ipod interface. It has the best looking and user friendly ipod interface available on the market. Whether with top down or not, there is going to be glare issues, but it is not bad. I have just been driving around with it and I just love it.

On the D3 you cannot adjust the viewing angle unlike the previous D or Z series. The D-3 is a 1 piece unit with 1 slot for the DVD/CD disk. Its also has a different Ipod interface and bluetooth interface from the previous D/Z series.

i am not talking about the tilt angle, which is a motorized thing - i am talking about the control in the setup menu for left, center, right

That certainly is a very neat installation. I received a Garmin NUVI 350 for my birthday (June 21). I never thought I would like it but have used it several times and it is great. Very accurate to my amazement. I like the portability. I thought it might be too distracting but with that feminine voice telling me where to go it allows me to keep my eyes on the road. My wife is jealous as it was her voice that told me where to go. Now I only have it at the house. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Looking forward to using it on our trip to Italy in the fall. That will be the true test. Also just as an aside my Aventurine Green baby turned 100K miles this week.

it's funny how quickly you get dependent on those things - just yesterday i was headed to a meeting, the address was not on the nav, so i had to do it the old fashioned way



i got distracted, somehow still waiting for the familiar voice to tell me my exit was coming up, consequently missed my exit, had to shoot past and come back, got stuck in stupid traffic, and was 15 minutes late

Yes, music is still available. The head unit will play dvd, cd, mp3 formats, it is also xm satellite ready, has the standard am/fm tuner. The bluetooth adapter will allow you to connect a bluetooth device (cell phone) and allow you to make/receive calls through the unit. The ipod adapter, will allow you to play your ipod through the unit. It is one trick unit. The only thing I wish it had was a double slot for the dvd/cd like the previous d/z units.

sounds like a great system. i have a couple more questions if you dont mind.....



Can you play a CD and still sue the navigation functions, or is there a seperate slot for the Navigation DVD? or is there no Nav DVD, but rather built in software?



And second, I presume the blue tooth works through the audio and is handfree when you are operating it?



Your excellent installation work has me open to the idea of getting this unit or something similiar to install in my car. I've been so spoiled by the factory unit in my previous daily driver (2004 Acura TL).



and lastly, the XM Satelite....is it ready for Satelite Radio, or does it have Real-Time traffic capabilitys as well (not that it makes a differance to me..just curious...i think i may just buy this unit thanks to you).

You can still use the navigation features and play a CD as the D3 will store your route in memory and as long as you stay close to the route you will be fine. It only has the single CD/DVD slot and no actual hard drive based navigation such as the z1/z2 models.



Bluetooth on the D3 requires a seperate module to be purchased, but should work nicely completely hands free, aside from hitting a button to either receive or make a call. As far as the traffic goes, I believe that it is just satellite ready so you get the tuner piece for the pioneer's and hook it up to the back of the radio.
