My new 968
#1

I just picked up my new 968 on Friday afternoon and by early Saturday morning I was driving her on the track. I brought the car to become dedicated track car after realizing that I may be becoming a track junkie even though I only started HPDE last year.

After 2 sessions of getting use to a rwd from a fwd, I was really loving the car and really glad I brought it. The 968 is a great car round the track as well a real nice ride to and from the track. The 968 is so well balanced, I well be having a lot of fun in it at the track.

Here's a couple of pic's of the car

Looks great - and appears to be well on its way to being a track car.

When I've had instructors drive my car on the track, they have often wondered why they have 911s when the 968 is so balanced and easy to drive fast.

Enjoy, and keep the shiny side up!!!

Thanks, so far I've added the sparco seats and 6 point harnesses. Tomorrow Precision is removing all the ac stuff which did not work anyway. Then next my kids and I will start stripping out the interior over the next few weeks. The rear wiper is also coming off as it also doesn't work, whats next to be removed I wonder?

I'm really looking forward to WGI at the end of July, this will be a good comparison for me between the 968 and my highly tuned 240 whp Mini GP that I was using for HPDE at WGI. Both cars have cross coilovers and bigger brakes but after last weekend at Pocono I feel that the 968 is a far superior track car, I've made a great choice as you guy's already know.

I'll be interested in your experience at the Glen. Have you driven that track before? That's the only track I've been on with my 968.

Good luck with the interior removal. There are horror stories about the difficulty in removing the carpeting - pretty incredible glue was used by the factory. Check on this site for some tips.

Oh Boy, I read a little about one guys experience, looks like I'm in for a fun time.

I've done several events with Trackmasters and Chinmotorsports at WGI, but in the Mini. The 968 should be a lot more fun, especially if I can remove a few lbs of carpet and glue between now and then.

When will you be at the Glen next? Maybe I'll see you there, I have planned on going to a few events there this season.

I've been at the Glen several times with Chin and with the predecessor, TracQuest. Maybe we've seen each other - I'd have been driving a black 968 cab. Anyway, I would be going up in the fall but I don't know about my future on the track. I've started to have some eye problems, and I'm not sure my sight will be sufficient for me to drive confidently on a racetrack. Fingers crossed...

Were you #966? That was my 1st time with chin. I ran with the green group till I was signed off. I was in the Thunder Blue Mini GP that had the 3 lions crest on the roof. I will be at the NJ Motorsports Park and WGI events in October with Chin.

Good Luck with your vision, I hope things work out for you and I get to meet you at the Glen.

Yup, that was me - 966. I was in the blue group, but something wasn't right, so I dropped myself down to the green. Turns out, my eye had just started to have a problem, but I didn't realize it other than to notice that - as I'd said - something wasn't quite right. Went to a specialist two weeks later, had some work done, we'll see what happens (no pun intended).

If I was sure I'd be OK, I'd love to try the NJ Motorsports Park event - looks like a great venue. Then I wanted to do VIR in - when is it, November or so? And, of course, the Glen.

BTW - I note you're from Northern NJ. I live in Mahwah.

Comp license, there's a good target for me to aim for, I don't know though what the wife would say but my 5 kids would love it . Although they might hate the car for a while once we start pulling carpet & glue out, they don't know yet about the glue so they love the car today.

Any good tips for the glue, my wife suggests nail polish remover?

I'm no longer looking forward to the carpet removal project , will it cost me my sanityI wonder?

I'm hoping to be at the NNJR event at Thunderbolt on Sept 5-7th, you are probably closer to there than me.

You are near LDG, did you ever take your car there for a dyno tune?

Started making the car lighter, so here's the start of the removal list:

AC

rear wiper

rear seats

rear carpet

CD changer

rear sound proofing

spare wheel

Porsche tools

approx 120 lbs removed, maybe more?

Next is me to shed 20lbs , followed by more carpet and sound proofing, then the sun roof mechanicals.

Sounds like removing the glue will take you down the path of dropping the 20 lb

You were right , 3lbs lost between last night and tonight, also the car lost 34 lbs more by removing:-

all the sun roof mechanicals

all the padding on and around the sun roof, (the actual roof panel only weighs 11.5lbs).

all the rear speakers and plastic under and around the rear quarter windows.

Gary, great looking 968! Welcome to the forum and the 968 world. I have not met a more helpful group of enthusiasts anywhere. (I am 71 and have been all over with the US Army). You have a good start on lightening your load - I recommend deleting the rear muffler and extending two straight pipes out the back. I lost about 30 pounds doing this and now the car sounds like a Sports Car should. Any good muffler shop can do the job, out here in New Mexico it only cost me $75. Good luck and have fun on the track, Bob Blackwell.

given how difficult it has been to tune exhaust, and how many alterations to the exhaust we have seen produce losses in power one place or another, i would caution against deleting the rear muffler without first seeing some charts - might work - might not - certainly the tone is improved, and weight is lost, but i suspect that some power could be lost too - as far as i know bob is the only one to do this yet, and i don't know if he has done any testing on it

Gary - congrats on the new car.

I think I saw you at Pocono with NNJR. I have a black 968 racer that literally lives at Precision.

Feel free to pm me with any questions (I'm not on the forums that often.)

Good luck and enjoy!
