PCA has their own evaluation, and price guides. It came in handy when I fought USAA for 2 years. They tried to give me 6500 for my 951 that had about 200 miles on a major over haul, with receipts for everything. They ended up shelling out 18k in the end.

Anthony, so sorry to hear about the accident and your injuries. I wish you a quick and full recovery.
Fax the insurance company the last 4-5 years of service receipts. When my 968 was totaled they offered something like $10,500. I then sent them the last few years of service records (some were relatively major repairs by the previous owner) and they got their offer up to about $12,500. (like earning $2K for an hour of work!).
Also, don't overlook the potential of buying back the totaled car. I got mine back for about $1,400 and there were lots of good parts still in the car -- even if I didn't want to disassemble it to sell parts, I think I might have gotten $3000.00 or so from people who were interested in the whole car for the engine and trans (completely undamaged) and other good parts. (think wheels, fenders, bumper covers, doors, etc. and a whole bunch of things).
Just this week, forum threads under "view new posts" one person is looking for a complete long block engine, another person is exploring for a used transmission (manual). Just examples of valuable parts.

I agree.. I read through the 928 forum on RL, and the amount of electrical & other problems that plague those cars is quite amazing. Even at $7K, you should still have a hefty budget set aside for maintenance and upkeep on them, especially if you can't/don't want to get your hands dirty. I still want one at some point, but I 'enjoy' (don't ask my wife about this) working on cars in my spare time, so it seems like a good project to me.

If you're thinking of a 928, maybe you should consider a mid-80's Jaguar XJ-6 or Maserati.....(maintenance nightmare alert)....

That seems to be the price the 951's have been asking for lately, not really sure they are worth that much. Depends on what you want, you will need to drive the 951 to see if you like and the lack of low end power and lag.

Depends on the mileage. The 1986-1987's tend to sell anywhere from 6-8k depending on mileage. The 1988-1989 Turbo S model which had 250HP and sport package (versus the regular Turbo's 217HP) tend to reach into the 9-15k range.
From the bunch of people I've talked to who have owned both - the 968 is a much more refined drivers car. Feels more stable at higher speeds, and of course the great body work.
Give the 951 a drive and see what you think - ultimately you're the one making the decision.
Sounds like they gave you a reasonable amount for your car, although the prices have shot up in the past few months for sales...which like you said - are making it hard to find a replacement.

Ive owned a few 951's. They are great, and with a stock turbo potential for more power is had easily. An exhaust, and chip, and you can see near 300 ponies. Lag, shmag. 951 is an awesome tuner car. Get a PPI, and make sure its never been hit. Whats the mileage?
