Hello all,
Thanks once again for all your help.
I purchased a 968 yesterday.
It was less then 2 hours from my house.
I t has 230K on it. excellent body, paint, and interior, far mechanical, always maintained very well, have all records.
One problem, he said it needs some type of gear.
I forgot what it was called. He replaced alternator and starter. But sometimes when you go to start the car.
It makes a winding sound, and then you turn key off, turn key again and it starts.
Paid 7500, drives very good, other then that.

My car had something similar when I first bought it. It would take a while before the starter "caught". Most of the time it would just spin. I took the starter to be rebuilt and that solved the problem -- it cost me $75 or so, IIRC.

The ring gear that's affixed to the flywheel? Hmm.... That's a good chunk o'change right there.

You didnt get a PPI? A PPI from a mechanic is usually about 100 bucks, and then you wouldnt have had any questions about what is wrong, cause the mechanic wouldve told you every flaw it had, and what needs to be done. This is why a PPI was stressed to you by several people over, and over again in this thread. My guess at that mileage the pinion gear is bad. Is there a whirring sound coming from the transaxle that sounds like a jet engine? Thats a lot of miles.

The car is a manual? If so, the ring gear is attached to the dual mass flywheel and not available, as far as I know, as separate piece. A new dual mass flywheel costs around $1K USD. You might be able to find a used one at DCAuto or by asking around on the various 968 boards. You still will pay quite a lot just for the part. Not to mention the labor for installing it.
Since we can't see or hear what's really going on, it's hard to tell what it could be. We can make suggestions, but ultimately, somebody needs to get under the car and take a look to determine what's wrong.

My intent wasnt sarcasm. A competent front engine Porsche mecahinc isnt that hard to find(the dealer isnt a competent front engine mechanic), and yes they couldve told you about every flaw mechanically speaking. Of course it cant identify every single flaw a car has. But mechanically it can tell just about everything if its thorough. Compression, and leak down tell quite a story in and of itself. Like mbardeen mentioned, some one needs to get under it and look, which is why we said get a PPI. You can only do so much on an internet forum. A PPI can save you a ton of cash, and lets you know how to negotiate the sale. Rule #1 when buying an old Porsche, get a PPI. Then there are less to no surprises if you get a competent shop. A PPI is just to be considered part of the cost of the car. Usually you can get a PPI, and it gives you some leverage to haggle, and absorb the cost of it.
Like Flash's sig says its far cheaper to do it right the first time.
