66k? Id follow up on that if I was you. I like 968 the best too, but a 951 has its advantages. Lighter weight for example. The 951 is sportier, the 968 is more GT. But turbo cars are fun.

Here is a comparison, 1996 951, 135K miles, $7,900. In Beverly Hills. It has some good recent service and some upgrades, Looks pretty good.

Like Blau wrote, I see the "non-S" 951s go in the $6-$8K range in SoCal in the last few years. But the one you found with the much lower miles is a very attractive difference. My guess is that 944/951 go for higher prices in Conn., since there are so many around here.



I like the 968s much better for a variety of important reasons, but paying $7,900 for this 951 vs $13-$14K for a 968 would make me think.

yeah those are common quirks for that car. I got like 50k into my 951 and I just dont feel like replacing the microswitch on the sunroof. Ive decided to just go manual once my money is right again. A lot of them are gonna have a cracked dash.

I would haggle on the price for sure. Make sure the odometer actually rolls. There is a gear in there that has broken on every one Ive ever owned. Thats the thing with 944's you cant ever really trust the odometer. Most all of them have broke, and miles put on before they were fixed. Still though, 66k means 66k to the DMV, and the resale value. Ask them if its ever been replaced(the odometer gear). Remember the list price is the intial asking price. Chances are they dont really know what they have, and think cause its a Porsche its worth a bunch of money. Id say 7500 might be a fair starting point, after you get a <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym>, compression/leak down tests, etc. A <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> will give you an idea of a good starting point.

Found one with 175000 miles, says still runs well.

wants $8000, is it worth it.

I have had three Boxster so far and they are great toys. I currently own a 2008 which is great to drive but not as an every day car. You can't carry much stuff on it and it is too noisy for a long drive (sorry but I'm too old to put up with the noise for a long time). If you have a bad back you will suffer to get in and out the car. I can see the 968 as an every day driver for most people but the Boxster...not be the case. I agree with Flash, be patient and find the right car.

First, sorry about your car.



Searching for a used Porsche is all about patience. I looked for a 951 for four months and then found my 968 locally. I wasn't even looking for a 968 but one showed up. My son has an 88 951 and I love that car too. It's not as refined for highway driving but it is LOTS of fun to drive. Be patient for the right car. If you need a car quickly it might be better to buy something else and then sell it when you find the right Porsche.



You'll find 951 prices all over the place. It seems to depend on what area of the country you live in. You really need to get a <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> performed before buying a 951 or 968 unless you are mechanically knowledgeable. There are many things on these cars that can be expensive to fix. To give an example, this is the <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> performed on the car I bought:

It definitely help me decide (along with two inch stack of service records) what the car was worth.



Also, it helps to expand your search nationwide. You can have a car shipped. They will pick it up and deliver it to your doorstep. If the seller isn't trying to hide anything he should be willing to take it to a garage of your choice for a <acronym title='pre purchase inspection'>PPI</acronym> inspection.

Problem is, between what Insurance paid for the car, and money I could come up with.

I could not come up with that much money.

Insurance really messed me around.

Hi all,



I just found a 1994 Porsche 968 Cabriolet 6 spd, 2 hours from my house, price 10,000.

100K Miles. Car is Black with Cashmere interior. Runs and drives perfect.

What is the difference between the Coupe and the Cabriolet.

As far as handling, performance, resale value, cost to fix, and anything you could think of.

Mine was a 94 coupe, and I loved it.

Primary difference? The coupe is hard and shiny on top, and the cabriolet isn't. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />



Of course the cabriolet let's you put the top down, but the cab isn't as good at handling corners because it's so flexible, unless you put all the braces on it. The cab is also louder and prone to leaks around the cab top. The coupe handles better, is lighter and quieter, but also has issues with delamination of the glass in the rear, leaks around the seals and around the sunroof, failure of the glass-trim epoxy, failure of the sunroof mechanism, etc.



They're pretty much a wash as far as cost to repair, given that the rear glass is expensive and hard to find someone to work on it, and a new cab top is expensive (although much easier to find someone to work on it).

a roof?



seriously - some will tell you that the cab is too flexible. with the bracing added, i find it to be just about the same. i push this car pretty hard too.



the top frame is known to break if you leave it in power mode, but if you make the simple change to manual mode, that problem goes away.



the cab is 154lbs heavier than the hardtop model. that will slow you down, but with the wind in your hair, you really don't notice.



other than that, they are pretty much the same. clean cabs tend to hold value better than clean hardtops, but the interiors also deteriorate faster, so it's harder to find them

Don't pay attention to Flash, he's on crack again.. The coupe is a far, far, far superior car in almost EVERY respect...the sole exception being it is a lot more modern looking , and will probably remain that way , than the coupe will ever be .. :-)

lol - i would expect you to say something like that. i think you've been spending too much time smelling the moth balls in that ginormous closet again. clearly a cab is a far superior car. in a hardtop you are denied the full driving experience. why settle for less than what you can have?
