Multi-parted (sorry!) door speaker questions (5.25")
#1

Well, after about 2 months of (happy) ownership, I'm tackling my factory speakers in my '92 coupe. I've removed the rear 4X6s in panels and replaced them with some 6 X 9s in sealed boxes and placed directly in behind my front seats (rear footwells) Thsi was a huge improvement in the punch the PO's Sony Xplode headunit delivered......I rarely have anyone forced to squeeze into the back seat so it's no biggie to lose that room - and I can always quick disconnect them in a pinch.

Today, I thought I'd tackle the doors' lower speakers (I have the 6 speaker system btw) - as one of them was crackling and likely rotted out.

I took them out and they were pretty much shot. Now it gets interesting.

First, I noticed that both speakers have a wierd +/- connection. Normally, you have a red (+) connection and a black (-) side. The Nokias that it has have 2 of each per side!? Like this...

+- +- I've never encountered that and can't figure out if I just need to cut them and splice in 1 'normal' wire to one side, or cut both pairs and run the 2 +'s and 2 -'s to one, each. Does that make any sense? (I can take pics if it helps)

Second problem is, as I put them back in and hooked everything back up (until I figure out the speakers I will replace them with) - it seems now that neither side will produce sound!? I did disconnect the 4 pin harness that links the wires behind the grill to better access everything so maybe I shorted something? Is there a fuse for just the front speakers? As far as I can tell, the speakers still work, but it seems I jiggled something loose/shorted something out, or blew a hidden fuse for these 2!?

Whew! Sorry so many questions - I just want to plug and play something in the doors and got myself in over my head!!

ANY help or advice is appreciated!

I have replace both 968 and 944 speakers with no problems. The extra wires you are seeing on the speakers are the jumper leads to the tweeter in the door. If you have put on the 4 wire door connector properly then I suspect you have inadvertently connected the + and + or - and - to each side to the speaker and therefore you will get no sound.

I have my car apart right now if you need clarification on colour codes and what goes where. Clear as mud I know.

That makes sense! My tweeters haven't worled since I owned the car and wasn't overly keen to get new ones to replace them anyways. I wonder if my re-connecting the old 5.25" speakers with the wrong +/- polarity has shorted something out? I 'think' I went thru a few back and forth changeovers to get sound, but mayeb not enough? Can you tell me exactly which of the 4 wires (from the 4 point harness to the 5" speaker) are which (+/- left/right) Will I need to run a standard 2 wire line from my head unit to new full range door speakers? Or can I splice in the 4 and reduce it to the needed 2?

Thanx!

polarity is not a "problem" per se with speakers - it only makes them run out of phase and sound wrong - it won't short them out

the wiring diagram is in the workshop manual - look for your year there, as the diagrams are different year to year (remember that if you have a 718 code, it is the previous year wiring)

I have a good set of Nokia front and rear speakers minus the tweeters if any one wants them. Price is just the shipping.

I haven't had a chance to try the old ones again, but is it possible that they no longer work simply because the exact wires aren't where they were when I disconnected thgem? That seems odd but as far as I can tell, they no longer produce sound - but again, I will tinker on Saturday and see if I can get anything out of them. Maybe it has something to do with my tweeters having never worked?

Splice away! The left speaker feed is Brn/Brn-Bk and the right is Grn/Grn-Bk. The 2 other wires in the cut out are the returns through a capacitor (simple crossover) to the top 2 wires for the tweeter. Doesn't matter if you connect the tweeter or not as the decks these days don't really get upset with impedance mismatches. Just make sure that the stripe lead is on the same connector for the front and read speakers or you will suffer the ills of phase reversal. Constantly wondering why you music sounds sort of OK but makes you ears feel funny.

BTW your amp should be ok even if you have shorted the leads while experimenting as most final stages these days have short cct overload protection.

UPDATE!

Figured out how the wiring went and hooked them back up using only 1 wire per side (the actual speaker has 2 'ports' per side) I actually bought some Pioneer 5.25"s to replace these and lo and behold, they didn't fit in the hole!? They seemed to jut out too far - it seems the actual speaker housing wasn't beveled properly for the existing cut out.......so I returned them and I'm back to square one - still with no working tweeters up top! The hell with it. Good enough for now!

Thanx for all the help!

As I am changing my speakers this winter I have been on the lookout for speakers that actually fit the Nokia holes. The closest fit without too much bother is the Hertz line of speakers. Maybe someone else has a better brand with proper hole alignment?

Hertz makes speakers? If they fit, let me know - I will still replace these tock units if somebody finds a simple plug and play replacement.

yeah, but you can only rent the music played on them, it will never be the song you want, and if you listen to them too long, you get charged extra

I was wondering if you ever changed out your speakers. What speakers did you go with? any issues?
I was thinking of changing mine out this winter too.
thanks

You can still purchase all of the original speakers. I replaced the mid-range in my car. Just seemed to me that, since I really wasn't trying create a concert hall, that simplicity counted for something. They fit in the holes, the wires fit, I was happy.

if you haven't already, start with a good head unit with enough power, and more than just bass/treble control

otherwise, you are just polishing a turd

I have happy new speakers in place but I didn't go with the Hertz. I ended up putting in Inifinity Reference Series drivers. They even came with the oversize adapter for the rears which are a weird 6 3/4 inchish size. Price was also much better as I think they just got discontinued in 2008 for the 2009 model. I all goes nicely with the 8" Cerwin Vega sub I put in the rear well. I still have to block off the wheelwells to create a speaker enclosure to imporve the base but that might happen next fall when she comes off the road again.

I think I still have my original Nokias if any body wants they for free. They are in perfect shape and I don't believed I have pitched them yet??
