When I purchased by 94 coupe the 3 underbody spoiler/pan/engine protection sheet metal were missing. I purchased the three major pieces and what I believed to be all the appropriate mounting hardware.



All is in place except for the rear most plate, the metal piece the everyone complains about being in the way for oil changes. Looking at the two wings that extend up into the centerline of the car it appears that there should be two holes in the frame (structure ?) of the car that should receive a bolt through the metal sheet metal.



There is nothing there. Nothing appears to be filled in as if some major body repair was done. Is there another bracket that I'm missing? Again I'm referring to the rear most mounting points for the metal (aluminum) belly pan.

There are two studs affixed to the car that the holes slide onto. The factory used nuts with captive washer, but separate nut and washer will work fine.

I didn't notice the studs when I was there. Next time under there I'll search them out. I hope I didn't lose them. I do have the recommended hardware so I should be in good shape if they're there.

Are we sure all 968s have three pieces? My 94 had two pieces, the front piece that fastens to the bottom of the bumper cover, and a "center" piece made of plastic that fastens below the radiator and to the crossmember in back. This second piece is directly below the front of the engine and the oil filter. I've seen in the parts book a diagram depicting a third part to the rear of these, but in previous posts I think people said their cars didn't have this.

I believe that all 968s had all three pieces when new but many people have removed some of them for convenience over the years. They may be of some value when driving for extended time at high speed on the Autobahn, but not needed for U.S.A. driving conditions. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that my 1994 968 never had the rear metal plate that Czar is describing. Like Czar's car, mine doesn't even have the attachment points to mount it. I'm the second owner of my car, and I know the original owner, so I can assure everyone that my car came this way from the factory. My 1992 968 does have the metal plate, and my assumption has always been that somewhere along the line Porsche eliminated it the same way they did with the plastic shrouding in the engine compartment. Same deal there, my 1992 has it, and my 1994 doesn't have it and never did.

My experience is that late 94s & 95s did not come with the metal plate or attachment points.

Well that may explain why I haven't been able to locate the mounting studs. Over the weekend I met another 968 owner and proceeded to climb under his car for a look. It looked simple enough. When I got home and looked at mine, they just weren't there.



Yes mine is a 94 coupe, so I possibly have the more efficient, light weight option package <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . I guess I shouldn't try to make my life more complicated by insisting in putting the metal cover back on.

Good choice. As soon as I realized that Porsche saw fit to eliminate this piece from my 1994 car, I removed it from my 1992 car, and its been on the shelf ever since. There have been no ill effects, and oil changes are a lot less hassle now.
