Update #6.

Might have found the problem. The "wires were deliberately crossed" to see what would happen and, as a results, cylinders #2 and #3 worked but #1 and #4 didn't. So, there is some sort of camshaft timing sensor that may have been put in "backwards" - this is being investigated now. Should have the answer by end of day.

Car is running!!

Seems like some sort of "sensor plate" was in the wrong place and the car was delivering fuel and spark at the wrong time. Back in business now. Small coolant leak still to fix and RS Barn chip to put in but HOPEFULLY I will pick it up on Wednesday morning to drive to the airport to go the Porsche 911 test drive event in Ontario. Looking forward to getting back into the old critter.

so what I have learned is this "uncomon complications to common problems are more common that common complications to uncommon problems".

Kim,

Remember the muffler will smoke like crazy the first time it gets hot. After .5 miles or so. IT will smoke for 10 miles or so when you stop. After car cools the next drive will be smoke free.

Don't think it's oil from your head rebuild.

Pete

Congratulations Kim,

I just had the same issue with my head gasket and had the valve job done and all the other stuff like belts etc. At the same time had the RSBarn cat back installed and a GT LSD put in. I put in the stage 1 chip in and with the airbox mod my baby moves.

I'm sure you will be very happy with your decision.

ps. my car had 130K miles when the gasket blew.

Last update.

Got car back today. Maybe a bad day because yesterday I was at the 911 Explore the Core VIP test drive of the new 911 and that is a hard act to follow. But,

After all the head work, engine seals, oil pan gasket, new belts, the RS total exhaust (headers plus cat plus cat back), RS Barn stage II chip and airbox mod the car pulls like a freight train. There must be 50-60 more horsepower and 40 more lb-ft torque than before. Acceleration in 6th gear is now just amazing. The car is also a lot smoother, maybe partly due to the chip and partly due to the extensive cleaning of the entire intake manifold area. For the first time I can hear the engine spinning up over the exhaust.

My only complaint is that the exhaust tip gets very hot and it has already scorched the paint on the rear valence where the cutout is for the muffler. I don't know if I can get the back of the muffler lowered or not. Has anyone else had this issue?

The test drive of the Porsche Doppelkupplung is amazing. These cars had the launch control and so you step on the brake, floor the throttle, wait for the little light, foot off the brake and out of the slingshot you go. 100 km/hr pops up 4.5 sec later. Might be an answer to a question that nobody was asking but it is a hoot nonetheless. If I had that car I would do it once for sure. However, when I got mine back back today I felt ready to take on on. Let the 911 hunting season begin.

Over and out on this one.

Dude you should write fiction. I have thoroughly enjoyed following this thread, even though I have virtually no idea what you are talking about (OK I do know what a head gasket is). What great prose.

The final word ....

So the car is still at the shop. Got it back, worked great, leaked oil like a sieve all over the driveway. Valve cover gasket was damaged during installation. Took it back, got new gasket installed, worked great, leaked oil like a bigger sieve. Jed Clampett seen lurking around the house. New valve cover gasket got folded during installation. New gasket installed and picking up tomorrow, just in time to put away for winter.

Will have fun in new year.
