Lumpy running/stalling when cold
#61

Sorry, yes I did mean fuel vapour recirculating valves. Thanks Martin!

Cheers Flash. Fuel filter was done last month. Dont think the injectors have ever been done so thats probably next altough I know someone who once lost half an injector into their engine when removing, so thats putting me off (Waylander). And then its onto fuel supply I guess!

This bloody saga continues!!

I had a independant mobile tuning guy come over this morning to take my injectors away for cleaning. He wanted to check the car in case he had other idea. He stuck a probe in the pipe and the car is running very rich when cold with a lot of hydrocarbons. Once the car is warmed up, the exhaust gases are good. He did suggest that the cat may be hiding something but didnt know.

So now he's taken the injectors for cleaning. When he removed them he did comment on the lack of fuel in the return pipe.

I did try blowing down the return pipe and seems like there's no airflow, even with the petrol cap removed. Any ideas if this is normal?

If you mean you are blowing through the return and not the pressure regulator then I would think you could blow back through that line.  If fuel cannot return you'd run at very high fuel pressure and pig rich in open-loop.  If the FPR is in place then you would not be able to blow unless you can best 3.8bar (hint: you can't)  Maybe a hard line has been smashed flat.

Thanks Joel. I do mean blowing directly into the return line, not through the FPR. Theres definitely no airflow even with the fuel cap removed.

Will have a look this weekend to see if a line has been smashed flat. Any other thoughts on this?

Also worth noting that I had my injectors cleaned today and the symptom remains.

this is the problem with the way we test this stuff.  all too often only a pressure test is done, and that's almost worthless.  you need a volume test at the specified pressure.  that will tell you what's going on in flow.  a clogged filter or bad check valve will mess things up in a hurry, as will a collapsed hard line (i've seen plenty of those, as they put the really close to where you want to put a jack stand) or swollen rubber line.

but, you do need to make sure the return system is working.

Thanks Flash. Is there a test for the return system?

can't say i've ever seen one.  if it were me, i'd probably run some light pressure (maybe 20psi) through the system and see what happens.  make sure you have the gas cap off or you'll expand the fuel tank.

Ok. I'm handing the keys to my mechanic next week. He's stumped based on what I've told him so he wants to run it as a daily for a couple of days. Will probably suggest he starts with a pressure test on the fuel rail and to check the return system
