Are all Tiptronics sluggish when cold ?
#1

I remember Bob ( flash ) telling me that Tips should be warmed up in the morning by letting the car idle for about 30 seconds or more before driving it. But I swear, my car needs at least two full minutes or even more on cold mornings , otherwise it will hesitate and stumble along for the first quarter or half mile, it seems. Even after half minute of idling, taking off in D meets with ridiculous hesitation, in the 1st or 2nd " manual " gears it's quite a bit better but still experiences some hesitation for the first minute of driving. After that it's perfectly fine. Problem, or normal for tips ?

What is the age of the o2 sensor? I had a cold issue with hesitation that ended up being the o2.

never had issues like that? I alway start it and drive away in 15 till 20 seconds........... When I bought the car, the dme and the fuelpump was not working properly. At that time only after a start is stumbled and rumbled but it is working fine. I can't tell you it is normall, but not in my case.

DME is fairly new. No idea how old the O2 is , nor the fuel pump age but will check the records .

I ran a test this morning to see how poorly the car would run if I did not warm it up at all. So a couple of seconds after it started, I took off, and drove it up hill right away ( my street has a fairly steep incline ). It did hesitate but not any more so than when it has had a chance to warm up for a minute or two. Now here's the interesting part : it only hesitates/stumbles when I give it very little gas - yes, I know what you're thinking : " wait, just touching the gas pedal gently ? Who are you and what did you do with Dan ?! " <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> . But if I step on pedal quickly, about half way down, it accelerates just fine, no stumble or hesitation at all. Same result if I floor it ; no problem ! So the cold start symptom manifets itself only when I drive away slowly. Does this change any opinions re the possible culprit ?

it does take some time to warm up a tip. the computer reads the temp and holds back some performance. this is to protect the transmission.

with the supercharger, i deliberately mapped things so as to protect against a premature downshift resulting in a lean condition. when you step on the gas lightly when it is cold, it is sending more fuel than the cold engine wants, due to the pull back of the tip computer. i had no way to manipulate the tip computer though, so given a choice between safe when warm, and smooth when cold, i chose safe when warm. i never intended for the tip cars to get a supercharger, so i didn't spend that much time on it. when the car came out here for tuning, i only had part of a day to fiddle with it before he had to go back home, and that was in wet weather, so things were very limited.

if i ever decide to supercharge the white car, i may get in there and try to figure out what to do about it. it will probably mean though that you will have to upgrade to stage 3.

The tip in my car has delayed up-shifts when cold. For example when leaving home and not yet warm, on the local streets it won't leave 2nd into 3rd until a much higher RPM compared to when cold. Manual shifting while cold of course works as an override to the control computer, but I always take it easy while the whole thing is not yet warmed up. When cold, it won't downshift by flooring the accelerator in the same way as when it is warm. Once warm it shifts like normal. Never noticed any effect on the engine, no engine hesitation, just seems like the tip is taking its time until warm, so it can feel like "lugging" depending on speed and current gear. I think the design likes the ATF to be at in a specific temperature range, since it flows through both 1. the radiator side tank on the starboard side (to heat the ATF up faster), and 2. the ATF cooler under the left front bumper cover to cool it as needed.
