Rough Start and Hesitation when cold
#1

So...I bought another car, an Audi A3 3.2 Quattro, and I have been driving the 968 a bit less, and it has developed an issue, which could be related, or just coincidence.

When I start the car, it has a very rough start...sounds bad, like at least one of the cylinders is not firing. it's rough enough that I've turned the car off once or twice because I was worried I might damage it. Once the mayhem subsides after 5 or 10 seconds, the idle is relatively fine, but there are two spots (1200 and 2200 RPM) where the car has almost no power and hesitates under acceleration. I drive 8 miles to work, and about halfway there it seems to settle out and I can't feel the flat spots anymore.

From my experience with working on cars, it seems like an issue with the spark.

The other thing I've noticed more long term is that the power band seems to have a noticeable flat spot in the 3,500 to 5,000 range. This has been the case for less than a year. I haven't replaced the hall sender yet, I replaced the plugs and wires about 2 years ago.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? I'm planning on wiggling the connectors today, and I have a hall sender I haven't gotten around to installing yet, because I am planning on powdercoating the valve cover when it comes off, and I might as well do these two at the same time because it needs to be removed to install the hall sender.

Cheers

Phil

Thanks for the advice Bob, I had forgotten about the blink test! I just did it and It is blinking:

One Long Blink

One Short Blink

Five Short Blinks

Would I be correct to think this is the first code of 1-5 of "no fault" with the long blink acting as a stop between blinking series?

yup - that's good news. no hall sender fault.

could be variocam. disconnect the variocam solenoid and see if the car drives differently.

failing that, i'm thinking you either have a vacuum hose disconnected, or a spark plug not torqued. check all of those.

Ok thanks,

I'll go through the car tomorrow and see if I can find anything. Do any of those symptoms point to dirty injectors?
