Batwings and Belly Pans, Oh My!
#1

Can anyone think of any precautionary measures to take to run without the batwing and two rear belly pans? (Other than no off-roading ) I know many cars are already missing the rear aluminum pan, so I can't think that'd be an issue. I currently have all three pieces removed to clean up the underside on the Coupe to start identifying problems (if you're bored, check out my blog) but wanted to run the car once it's cleaned up to see what's still an issue. Bad idea??

Darryl, it'll be fine. You may see a small increase in water temps.
I drove mine fir a few months last summer with no covers.

yeah - just higher running temps and increased frontal lift, both due to too much air getting under the hood - i wouldn't take it over 100

all of the oem pans are on the front of the car - there is the front apron which is attached to the bumper cover - then there is the center pan, which is fairly square and covers most of the engine - then there is a third metal pan behind that on the earlier cars, but was deleted on later cars

there were no pans on the standard cars at the rear of the car

I've driven without the pans since I got the car (including a couple of top speed runs and lots of track time) with zero problems. I didn't even know that there were supposed to be any pans until I read it here in another thread regarding under hood temps. I have now found the two front pans and will fit them shortly.

Is the center pan the same as the 944/951 S2?

i believe both the center and rear pans are earlier 944 items - not sure which model

center pan (protective plate) part number 944.504.167.03
rear pan (protective plate) part number 951.504.069.00

Darryl, the only precaution I have is that without the "Batwing" cover under the front bumper the oil cooler in the right wheel well is exposed. I left mine off for only a week-end and hit a foreign object from the road which tore a hole in the oil cooler. I got home before losing too much oil, but it was expensive to replace and easy to avoid. (Just leave the front cover on! I have left the other two covers off under the engine for several years with no noticeable effect. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

The 944 pan will fit and is very similar, but there are some slight difference between the two.

944.505.175 is the correct number for the "bat wing"

I am currently tearing down the front of the car since I wanted to replace the chicken wire which acted as a front grille. A bunch of stuff was missing, broken or (partly) missing.

I also bought myself a new front apron, because it was also gone. Apparently partnr 944.505.523.00 should go on the batwing somewhere, but there are two metal strips riveted to where I think the trim piece should go. Anyone has any idea where I need to attach it? Maybe the metal strips are just for transportation and they have to be removed?

Any help is much appreciated!

that trim piece actually goes on a rib on the top side of the apron, and creates a seal between it and the radiator

p.s. - do not remove those metal strips.  they are there to provide rigidity.

Thanks! Now to figure out where the 2 million brackets, bolts, clips and washers go. The car is going faster already, I can just feel it!
