I recently started to hear a knocking sound (almost like the rattle of a diesel?).  The sound only happens from a dead stop and the steering wheels have to be turned all the way, or almost all the way to the right or left.  The sound lasts for less than 1 second (maybe 4-8 knocks) and happens after the car starts rolling but before the clutch pedal is fully released.  It will not make the sound when starting straight.  My guess is the right front wheel or under the hood on the right side is the location.

 

I started to think it was my driving and a near stall, so I was revving to 2000 before releasing the clutch and the sound still happened.  When the sound occurs the car does not rattle or shake.  Unfortunately I cannot duplicate this sound every start.  It seems to be more frequent when the engine in relatively cold?

 

I've looked for loose components, but nothing. 

 

Any help where to look would be appreciated.

I'm thinking that perhaps the power steering fluid leak from the connection at the bottom of the reservoir has degraded the bushing on your steering rack. Look for signs of bulging or deteriorated rubber.

A tie rod end or ball joint will sometimes produce a sound under hard turn. Check for play.

Thanks for the ideas.

 

The noise appears to be coming from the right front quarter.  I haven't been able to isolate if it is coming from the wheel or under the hood?

 

The car does not have a LSD and the noise is definitely not coming from the rear.

 

I know I do have a slow power steering leak, but I keep the fluid level in operating range.  I'll check all fittings and hoses.

 

I'll check for wheel play.  The car does have 147,000 miles and original ball joints and tie rods.

 

I know it doesn't rule it out yet, but sort of relieved no one has pointed the finger at the engine???
