I am generally not a fan of pop-up headlights. As mentioned previously, the mechanism adds weight and complexity.



What I mainly dislike are the big flaps that come up with the headlight. It can look downright hideous (think first MX-5 / Miata) especially with a large round headlight that doesn't "fill" the socket.

It can look reasonable (think Honda / Acura NSX) with a squared off headlight.



Having said that, I do like the way Porsche have done them on the 928 and 968. I like the purity of just having the headlight rise up. And it still looks aerodynamic with just the pod sticking up.

It does still look a bit odd on the 968 with the headlights up though, since the leading face isn't vertical.

Through the years I've had several cars with pop-up lights: 914, RX7, Supra, Miata, and now my 968. I think all of them look better with the lights down (or back) but each of them is attractive in its own way. However, I admit that every time I see my 968 with the lights up, I'm reminded of a bugeyed Sprite.

I agree that I prefer the look of the 968 with the lights down, and will drive until dark has fallen before I crank the dial...



What's funny to me is that every time I see the lights up I think how much the profile looks like a 911, I never think that when the lights are down.
