low temp fan switch
#1

After replacing the fan switch on my 92 cab with a low temp unit the fans come on at eight a clock position but they seem to run at a very high speed and never at the low setting unless the a/c is turned on. also they run almost all the time to maintain the low temp. Now I'm thinking of replacing the thermostat with a low temp one just to get a better match because it seems that the engine is trying to get to a higher temp and the fans are trying to reduce it constantly. Any ideas?

you may have gotten a bad one, or the wrong one - did you use the right part number? you need to have a dual speed switch - it is a vanagon part, and not the 944 part

what is the ambient temp?

with the standard thermostat, and the low temp dual switch, you should be running 5-15 degrees over the thermostat point, or 100 degrees over ambient, whichever is higher

you do not want to run lower than 190 - gasoline engines runs best slightly above that temp

a low temp thermostat can create a situation whereby you saturate the coolant and the thermostat stays open - this is bad - you will rapidly overheat at that point

This is an electrical glitch of some kind. The fans should start at low speed first.

A thermostat establishes the minimum operating temperature only. Good for keeping the engine warm in very cold ambient temps. The upper temperature limit is a function of the efficiency of the cooling system.

I've seen various opinions, but what speed should the fans actually run at with the AC switch on? Mine are only running at low speed now. If they're supposed to run at high speed, I suppose that would affect AC cooling ability as well?

I think my fan switch is biting the dust and will likely be replacing with the lower temp version. The fans were intermittently running constantly several months ago, so I've known that it's on it's way out for a while. It seems to kick on the low speed fans around 9 o'clock on the gauge, but with recent warmer weather I've started to see the gauge go slightly higher than the 10 o'clock mark once or twice, so I'm thinking the high fan switch function is becoming unreliable. With one fan fuse out, I'm able to get the other fan to run at high, so that's good. Any thoughts?

For the lower temp fan switch, is it the 85/93C one here?....

I see they also have a 75C one, but that seems too low and only has one temperature. I wonder if that one just kicks the fans on constantly.
