Recent hot weather has been pushing the temp needle up
#1

OK, so in Seattle we call it hot when it is in the 80's.

The temp of the car has been going up with AC on at a light, or in slow moving traffic.

I put in a bottle of "water wetter" and it worked beautifully. It dropped the temp needle one mark, with less auto fan turn ons.

I reccomend it and will use it from now on with each coolant flush.

Did you use the additive or the full change? I am having the same problem and not sure if overheating or wonky gauge....It is 90 + here in the mid-day in Florida.

Thanks

4th of July weekend I ran 150 miles, no stops with the A/C on full blast...regular approved Porsche Coolant, no additives. Even in traffic my needle never rose more that two needle widths over 8:00.

Water pump (and everything related to cooling) was replaced in May 2006, including hoses, low temp thermostat, low temp fan switches.

YMMV,

Hmmmm...Even with a new water pump, standard thermostat and coolant, mine is slightly below the second mark(10 O'Clock) when it's 112-118 degrees. May have to try the "water Wetter" and see.

the low temp fan switch works wonders too. i use both.

a very common problem with these cars is from people using tap water in their radiator. never ever do that. the passages in these radiators are very small and clog easily, with tap water deposits or phosphates. use distilled or deionized water only to fill with your phosphate free coolant.

Bear in mind also that while Water Wetter doesn't seem to indicate a difference, some of the off-brand water wetting agents specify to not use them with distilled water alone, but rather to use tap water or a glycol/water mixture with them. As tap water is not recommended in our engines, that implies a glycol mixture. Water Wetter also mentions that to maximize cooling, you should use the most water and the least antifreeze possible to prevent freezing in your climate (water being a better coolant than glycol).

I'm betting this is why my temp gauge is higher since I changed the coolant - I'm willing to bet it was not 50/50 in there before...

I will have to check with my mechanic to see exactly what he used. When I run and run, the temps are fine, it is the stop and go traffic that seems to kill me. I figured I would try the water wetter and see if that changed anything before I tore into the instrument cluster to see if I have bad gauge contacts.

Just my 2 cents, but after doing a bit of research, I think this water wetter stuff is bogus, or at best, is covering up the root cause of a problem. As Jay says, with a properly functioning cooling system, the needle should never even get to 9:00 oclock. Assuming the gauge is accurate, of course.

I think I have a wonky gauge, but I thought for 10 bucks I would try it. It does have some good reviews and I doubt it will hurt anything.

Added Water Wetter - 81 degrees outside - Coolest it's been for a while - gauge all over the place

It seems that when I honk on it, it gets right up there, then when I let down it cools off and quick, like within a quarter to half mile...

I think I have a wonky gauge since it is so all over the place with in just a few minutes of driving...

the photos were taken about a minute to 5 minutes apart

By the way, I do know my gas gauge is not working and nether is my odometer, which also makes me think I have a gauge issue and not a temp issue.

Do this, when the gauge goes up like that, give the plastic a good tap...see if it comes down. Gauges in my car can be wonky at times.

Lol, I saw that on one of your earlier posts and have tried it a few times with no real impact on the reading. I hate to get too heavy handed and crack something - then I am in real trouble. Maybe I shoud just put a piece of electrical tape over it like my old VCR clock.

Whoa - faulty gauge or not, I would be freaking out driving with the gauge getting up that high. Personally, I wouldn't drive the car until I had this investigated.

Yea, working on it. Most of the stuff associated with this is new - H2O pump, Thermostat, gaskets, coolant....Fans are confirmed to be working, so it has to be the gauge.

Have you checked the temperature of the hoses using an IR thermometer? I agree that it is most likely the gauge, but given the risk of total destruction (I'm talking about your wallet, although the engine wouldn't be in the best of shape, either), I would make sure that the temperature of the hoses is OK.

I don't have an IR thermometer - I am not a mechanic. I really don't enjoy working on vehicles. I am going to just take it to my import guy and say fix it.

Faulty gauge? I noticed the fuel level was at empty also. Past empty! For photos taken 5 minutes apart, going 40, 60 and 70 MPH between photos, yet the odometer reads 44015, trip is zero in each photo, your cluster is whacked. I guess it could be a loose impeller on the water pump. But I agree a cheap laser thermometer is in order.

I have already stated the odometer and fuel gauge are not working - with the craziness of the temp gauge - I was thinking I had a faulty gauge.

The car sat for 5 years. The odometer worked before I took it to have the transaxle rebuilt, then it quit. Again, I will probably just take it to my guy so that way if he breaks something it's his butt not mine.

Also I don't really feel like spending money on an ir thermometer that I am only going to use once.
