Extreme Temp Gauge Fluctuation
#1

Out of now where today. The gauge jumps, not a gradual creep, but JUMPS from normal to top white line, sit there, waver around, jump back down to normal, even went lower one time ont he way home (20 minute drive)... It never went above 3/4, but it's completely erratic and has no rhyme or reason (lowering when moving, raising at red lights).

I had lower rad. hose replaced last week, but there's no fluid on the ground.

I have a D1R SC on the car, but never effected temp before.

Turned on heat to check temp, seemed normal for an 80 degree day in light traffic.

A/C is never on.

Rad. fluid is normal.

Odometer went out about three months ago, but all other clusters are fine.

Any clues or guesses???

Thanks!!!

I'm guessing its the gauge and not an actual temp problem. If I tap my cluster the temp gauge returns to normal...

check the sender at the front of the engine. i'm guessing you buggered the wires or connector there. you had to be at that very spot to run the vacuum line and mess with the MAF wires.

Mine did the same thing and I spent a LOT of unnecessary cash replacing things that might have been the problem (thermostat, temp sender unit, water pump, fan relay, etc) and it was the gauge itself all along. These things are known to be dicey over time. If your car is not a daily driver, then I highly recommend taking out the gauge cluster (it's a relatively easy job), boxing it up real nice and sending it to North Hollywood Speedometer in Los Angeles. It'll take a couple weeks to get it back, but everything will be working perfectly and you'll be much happier knowing that what you're seeing is accurate. Plan on $100-$150 max. If your car IS a daily driver, then find a local shop who really knows these Porsche VDO gauges and how to repair them.

Sensor is seated well.... but the two connectors are fully exposed.... don't know if that's it. I haven't taken it out since. But I did notice something that CAN'T be right. There are two hoses that come from the driver's side of the engine block, around the front to the passenger's side. One is about 1/4", the other 1/8". The 1/8" goes to a part tucked in by the PS reservoir. See pic. Circled is where the hose goes/comes from. The arrow shows the area in which the hose was SEVERED and then coupled together.

I found the hose undone. I tried to get in there (engine was hot and I don't have midget hands) and kinda got it back on.... but the coupler isn't the tightest.

What is the hose going to/coming from? Would that affect the temp?? And.... can I live with a new coupler on there, or does it need replaced? THANKS, OH 968 GODS!!!

The 1/8" tube is the vacuum line leading to the heater control valve, not likely to affect your temperatures. The 1/4" tube... I'm at a loss without a picture. Possibly it leads from your coolant tank to the water pump?

How is your coolant level? If it's the same as it normally is, I'd say your most likely bet is bad water temp sensor or bad ground on your instrument panel. If I recall correctly, the bad grounds are a fairly common problem on the 944s.
