Lift Points to Change Wheels
#1

My local tire guy is great to deal with. He has a lot of selection, great service and great pricing. However, he is a 2 bay operation and does not have any installed lift equipment. When I had my last wheels put on they used hydraulic floor jacks ... 2 at the front corners, and one at the back under the transaxle. I am going in this week to have my refurbished 993 Cup Wheels installed and wanted to know if I should allow them to jack from the transaxle again. Is this potentially harmful to the transaxle mounts? What is the best place to jack from at the rear of our cars if not the transaxle?

Thanks

Bracer

That's probably not a good idea. There are 2 lift pads just forward of the rear wheels - these are recommended for lifting.
It's common to lift solid rear axles at the differential, but not aluminium case transaxles with a torque-tube and mounting pads.

I had a broken trans mount (tiptronic) last year (but not from erroneous jack placement). It was more than I felt I should tackle at home => $1,000.00. (which seemed high to me in the first place). But I wouldn't risk lifting on the trans when there are 2 jack pads for that purpose.

Do not lift from transaxle. That can destroy the mount which is a flexible rubber meant to have weight pulling on it and not be in compression.
Like $250 for a new mount.
