The computer says knock sensor bad, but the shop says it's not, and are trying to find out what is tripping the Check Engine light, but have not been able to at this point. Has anyone had/solved this problem? Thanks in advance.

Memphoman, I received your email but didn't know how to respond. So, let me do it here. I have not had a "check engine" light problem; the only warning light issue I've had is the airbag, which was caused by a faulty clockspring mechanism. I've also never done anything with the knock sensors. So, I don't think I'm a source of any help on this problem. Sorry, and good luck getting it solved. I will be interested, of course, in following what you find because you never know...

For a few months I had the Check Engine light coming on intermittently while driving. Never consistent, and not isolated to any particular speed or driving condition. The error code would read as Knock Sensor 1. I cleaned the contacts for this knock sensor as described over at 968.net (use the search feature), but that did not seem to solve the problem. Since the CE light still only came on intermittently, the service guy said not to do anything with it until the CE stayed lit.



After a few more weeks of this, I checked the error codes again, and was now getting a fault for the O2 sensor. I replaced the O2 sensor (an easy DIYer, even for a hack like me), and problem solved. Never did fix anything with the knock sensor, but I've had no more problems. The failing O2 sensor could have affected the knock control and triggered that fault code, masking the underlying O2 sensor issue. I'm speculating - someone else here may confirm whether my logic is flawed or not. Good luck tracking this down.

i would seriously consider that it was merely the fuel - these cars NEED 90 (RON+MON/2 or 93 RON) MINIMUM!!! - they want higher - the book say it, the fuel cap says it - they mean it - the knock sensors kick in if it's lower

While Bruce and I were chatting about diconnecting power and clearing the DME of power to reset everything, the mechanics were doing the same. No light. And, they've been trying to make it come on. Ghost in the machine. They don't know of anything documented of computer problems with this car, but you never know. Seems to be fine. I think I'm going to have some fun Saturday in the hills of Arkansas.
