Key off window
#1

Finally getting tired of dealing with 1980's era accessories in the 968, I decided to wire up my power windows so they work all the time, no key required. Couldn't think of any reason not to...

It's an easy, convenient reversible modification that you won't likely undo.

Open the fuse box.

Remove relay G7

Fabricate a jumper wire consisting of 2" of 18 g wire with spade terminals on each end (crimp style).

Plug the jumper between terminals 30 and 87 where relay G7 used to reside.

The windows will now function without the key.

hmmm - convenient for sure - but isn't every other car like that? i don't think any of the accessories in any of mine work without the key - the glaring and annoying exception being the cigarette lighter in the denali - unfortunately i use that for the radar detector, which means i either have to unplug it every time i get out of the car, or turn the detector off - i wish that was switched hot

just a thought - the only potential drawback i see to the mod is if somebody figures out the window switch works and wants into your car - not an issue for me, since the top is always down, but how tough is it to get a coat hanger in there and push the button?

cool idea though for sure

What I really meant was windows and radio.

I guess I recall my last two BMW's the windows and radio work key off, until you open the door.

no worries

i can't remember how my E30 worked - jeep was same dead with no key - E46 and denali same thing except for entry seat and lighting settings, cigarette lighter, and on the denali the radio stays on until you open the door (odd)

still, i like the idea - i hate searching for the key so i can hit a switch, especially when working on the car

Allot of new cars are doing that with the radio, windows and even sunroof, normally 10 or 20 min before it stops automatically. I'm not sure about your 968s but my 93 does the same thing for the windows but it will stay on until the door is opened, (no time limit)

i seem to remember reading that in the manual - i understand the desire to have it like that all the time though - i have recently been doing a lot of interior work, and needing my windows to go up and down a lot - a real pin to constantly have to put the key in and out just to do that

Now that you mention it, I think my 1988 944 turbo did that, the windows stayed on until you opened a door. I know my 968 does not do this. Hmm...

according to page 13 of the owner's manual, it should - the windows should work until a door is opened

On my 92 (euro) coupe the windows work without the key when the door is open. I found this a useful feature which allows to close the windows if you forgot and are already out of the car.

While your at it...it really irks me that I have to have the key on to open the locks...would be great to have that feature until the door is opened.

Just for another data point, ny 85.5 944 windows worked until door open (which I liked) and my 94 968 does not. What causes this?

I haven't driven my car since Saturday because of all of the rain we have had here in the east. Recalling this thread, when I got to the office this morning, I shut off the ignition, opened the door and still had reserve power to the windows. Go figure.

Best,

WA

Interesting...perhaps '94 MY was a change. I know that my car positively did not allow window use without the key on. My 944's all had that feature. I know there are subtle changes over the years on the 968, I guess we can add this one to the list.

One day when I get the chance to install my new CD player, amps and speakers, I'll do a post on how to wire the stereo to play with the key off but still in the ignition, unless someone else already has.

My 94 Coupe has the windows power until the doos opens, could this this be part of the special code just about every car has?

Just to help confuse the issue:

1) my windows do not operate until I open the door, when I turn the car off, they stop working;

2) My cdr-210 radio will turn off with the engine, but will turn on and stay on when I press the ON button on the radio.

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Is it early 94? Mine is the late 94, with the 993 seats.

Nothing here. I get nothing once the key is pulled. Of us guys that the windows DON'T work when the key is off and out, have you cleaned your grounds? I have not, and I have started to notice that my interior clock dims out at night, and a few other quirks. I would really like to find the time to do my grounds and see how much that fixes!
