Think my CR-1 died
#1

My stock sound system has always been a bit touchy in bad weather. Some of this is the AM amp. After the remnants of Alberto dropped 7 inches of rain on me yesterday the head unit, overnight, decided to finally give up. Still has power but all of the radio presets dumped and the seek/scan is now inop. I doubt there is a fix - probably just need to replace.

I am not a maniacal audiophile. I don't need 3000 watts of Nakamichi. The factory speakers still sound fine. The ancient FM modulated CD changer works fine. I just want to replace the head unit with an OEM look and possibly add the ability to plug in my iPod.

Ideas?

Do a search, several of us have recommended an Alpine model, can't recall the model number right off.

I have a CR-1 and changer. If you want, PM me.

I put an Alpine 9856 in mine - great radio. I liked the iPod control.

If you have the remote CD changer, it will only work with an Alpine unit of the same vintage, such as the CR-1. Some of us have installed Becker radios out of Boxsters, the CR-220 and CDR-220, have Auxillary inputs, the first Boxster radios the CR-210 and CDR-210 do not. The factory wiring harness is set up for Becker plugs, the CR-1 had an adapter harness out the back to connect to the Becker plugs. The existing stock harness plugs directly into the Becker radios. For over radios you will probably have to rig an adapter harness, no problem if you like wiring.

I installed a CR-210 and love it...but if I had it to do over again I'd spring for the extra $$ and get the CR-220. Make sure you get the code WITH the radio as getting it later may not be possible. Thats' the reason I changed radios in the first place...the code for my CR-1 did not come with the car I bought.
