Key dinger does not shut off

My 94 Tip Coupe often dings after I take the key out and it's been fun trying to find the cause. I think there is a problem detecting whether the key is still in the ignition switch because the dinging will go away if I put the key back in turn it back and forth, then take it out. Has anybody else had this happen? I wonder if the ignition switch is bad. Does anybody know how it detects whether there is a key in or not? I thought I might shoot a dab of contact cleaner in there to see if it's a corrosion or dried grease issue.

I also discovered that if my blinkers are on after I take my key out, it will also ding. That one left me in the parking lot for 10 minutes before I figured it out. Should I go hunt for a grounding issue or is this the normal?

It will ding if you have your fogs on as well. I do that one all the time.

Yea but his goes away if he puts the key in and out a few times so prob no the fogs. I would heavily be on the contacts inside the ignition switch are getting all grimy after years of key metal dust. Get a can of GFC Electrical contact cleaner (or equiv - no residue) and soak it a few times.

Strange, my car does not ding if the fogs are on. If I leave the headlights out, it dings, but the lights actually turn off. When I have the ignition problem, the little red triangular gear indicator on the VDO guage also stays lit. I just shot the ignition with contact cleaner. We'll see if that helps.

My ignition lock has been destroyed and I notice that is the lock (or part of the ignition switch) does not jump back towards the driver and I get the ding. It stays pressed in and does not understand that the key is out. Try to pull out your key faster and see if that helps...

It's been four days since I shot the ignition switch with contact cleaner and no more dinging! That was way too easy. I swear that stuff is one of the best tools I own (bottle opener excluded).

I spoke too soon. The dinger gremlin is back [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/huh.gif[/img] . I think I need a new ignition switch. I'm thinking there is a spring in there that is just worn out and does not turn the switch off when the key is out.

Ignition switches seem pretty cheap. Does anybody have experience re-keying them?
