Just saying hello
#1

Haven't been here in a while as I have been really busy. Mould never stops growing and, as you will read later, babies never stop being produced. We are controlled by the needs of our genes.

Thought that I had finally fixed all the glitches in my white car and then the starter went. Porsche dealer suggested buying a reconditioned one from Paragon, which I did and, when it arrived, it was apparently a new Porsche unit! Dealer seemed very impressed by that. Now the A/C seems to be on and off. Switch seems to work but sometimes I have A/C and sometimes not. Did get the entire climate control looked at and it works perfectly now other than the A/C thing.

Put a new hatch seal on and that really quieted down the noise in the back. Also stopped water from getting in. Whoopie. Just wasn't aware of how much air leakage there was around the old one until I replaced it.

Has any ever heard of the oil pressure sensor failing such that pressures seem to low. Not on/off but seeming to work, just too low when hot. After running at 25C for an hour the main warning and oil light will flicker on idle. Goes out if the idle is increase just a bit to about 900 rpm. Shows about 3-3.5 bar at highway speed in 6th. Shows about 4.5 - 5 bar at startup when cold. Don't like that and am just wondering if maybe I might get lucky and the sensor be bad. Or, of course, an engine rebuild might be needed. Pete, can you open a shop in Nova Scotia? I'll supply all the Tim Horton's you can drink (this might be too Canadian an icon).

Anybody ever notice a lot of black stuff on the fenders behind the wheels on white cars (especially at the rear)? Trying to figure if it is tire rubber, oil (shouldn't be in front) or crap off the road. Car uses about 1 litre of oil in 2000-3000 km. Never "see" it on my blue cab.

I also bought a Cayenne about a month ago. 2006 V6. Since I have 2-968s I didn't need another "sports car" - just something larger with AWD for winter. I was amused to read that Flash doesn't see snow - we just got rid of winter about 3 weeks ago. Works well and, unless you really want to suck up gas, goes plenty fast for my needs. Can always "force" myself to drive a 968 if I want to get crazy. Now have only Porsches in the stable. Take a lot of flak at work for that!!!

Sorry to have missed the fun at Hershey and Newtown - just couldn't do it. Really wanted to attend again since it was great last year. Have 5 maternity leaves at work and just can't be away with 65 staff and the whole front office essentially new. My loss - it sure looked like fun (again).

Say this one fast - how much noise annoys an oyster?

Kim,

My 944 is currently doing the same thing. Light flickers when oil pressure drops to about 1.5bar but idle is fine...no signs of wanting to stall. I obtained this car as a "freebie" from my P-car mechanic buddy who practically rebuilt everything in it at some point or another. It's my semi daily driver and just rolled over 230K miles a few days ago. I asked him if he ever replaced the oil pressure sender and he said he doubted it. That's what I'm going to try as that's an easy replacement and makes perfect sense. With only 30K on the engine overhaul, I wouldn't think it's anything major, so hopefully that is your issue as well. I don't know when I'll get to it, but we can keep each other up to date as to the fix.

Missed you in Hershey...very neat to see all the 968s at one time.

Kim,

Re: the oil pressure sender...I had the same symptoms that you describe and the problem turned out to be the sender. I was ready to replace rod bearings even though my car only had ~54K miles. I wrote about here. Here's to hoping your problem is also with the sender.

I too had a problem with the sender. Replaced it, and then had an accurate reading. I wonder if soaking it in gasoline or similar would ungum the pinhole in the sender. My opinion is that it was a mechanical issue with the sender, not electrical.

I had the oil pressure sender replaced on Thursday. At idle, the oil pressure went from 1-1.5 bar (this was causing the oil light and master warrning light to flicker and sometime stay mostly on) at idle to about 3 bar, and from about 3-3.5 bar at 3000 rpm to about 4-4.5 bar. Anyone with "low" oil pressure should try this first.

That's good to hear, Kim...I haven't had time to replace mine of the 944 yet and at this point, I'm simply waiting until I need to change the oil again...another 1000 miles or so, so I'll just deal with the flickering light.
