Is it time to openly discuss Timing Belt Failure?
#21

Original timing belt! I am having a panic attack just thinking about that...

I paid right around $2k for parts and labor on the belts, water pump, rollers and thermostat.

That doesnt factor in the repeat trip to have the balance belt timing rechecked, then the 3 hours in my driveway to finally correct the BB timing. The shop wasnt checking it after tightening so each time the lower shaft was 30 degrees off. Id suggest double checking it as a matter of protocol after the shop finishes their work.

Parts and labor cost for me was:

Timing belt/timing belt tensioner//roller/tensioner roller/balance shaft belt/tensioner/aux roller/v belt/multi rib belt/thermostat/coolant/water pump/gasket.

Parts: $1032.00

Laboir: 447.00

Timing Chain Rail:

Tensioner guide/valve cover gasket/camshaft seal/ring.

Parts: $590.00

Other replacements (dist cap/spark plugs/oil filter/balance shaft gear/dist rotor. oil chg) labor included: Total $2990.97

My car was test driven by the owner of the shop and had no issues. I actually drove it to San Diego the next day and then back to the North Bay a few days later with no issues.

i cringe every time i hear "no issues".  anecdotal things like that are a statisticians nightmare, but a reality.  of course results will vary.  there will be guys who get 100k on their belts with "no issues".  there will also be guys like me who popped one at 25k.  nobody has an issue, until they do.  i'm not suggesting that anybody's experience is wrong, or anything like that.  i'm just saying that others may read posts, and make assumptions.  everybody wants to hear nothing but good news, and consequently may assume something, and then find out the hard way that they guessed wrong.

with belts, the rule of thumb is:

change them at 45k miles, or 4 years, whichever comes first

retension the balance belt after 2400 miles from installation

retension balance belt every year, regardless of miles (this is how you avoid premature failure - ask me how i know)
