I didn't get a short shift yet because I didn't really find anything I liked. So, like other I lopped off 18mm from the shifter, cut some new notches and lowered my knob [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif[/img]
If I install the new shift kit will my shift be stupidly short and hard with the shorter shift stanchion?

Sorry, not sure how post 112 applies to a cut down shifter and how it might operate with your short-shift solution. Does your gear replace the whole shifter assy and therefore the cut down shift lever is moot?

well, it stated clearly that i gave up on the rear mounted concept

so as to clarify:

shift knob is the piece that goes on top of the shifter
shifter is the piece that runs from the delrin bushing at the bottom up through the shift knob
shift linkage is the rod that runs down the center of the car
shift mechanism is the assembly in the rear of the car at the transaxle

the 944 racing short shift kit replaced the shift mechanism

i am now working on a short shifter, and will have specifics for every one in a few days - i really don't want to go into more detail until the prototype is done - the design is registered, but i don't want to release details until i know for sure that it works as i intend - i already get way too much flack as it is

Sorry I think we just have our verbal wires crossed. I realize you aren't doing anything at the back and I wasn't referring to anything I had done back there either. I will go with the premiss that you are replacing the shifter/bushing assy which would, ipso facto, suplant my shifter mod. I'm cool and await your pics!

i am next in line at the fabricator - they have been incredibly swamped (in this economy i guess that's a good thing) - one quick check for fitment and i'll do the run

Just for a bit of further clarification - I have a short shift kit from Speed-6, which I believe mounts at the transaxle, making it a "short shift mechanism." What advantage does the kit you're working on have over the one that's in my car? I'm pretty happy with mine, though it is pretty notchy, and it has some vagueness in the side-to-side direction, making finding the right gear occaisionally a bit of a challenge, especially at the track. Would your short shifter work with my unit, or would I have to find a stock mechanism? Thanks.

i am in the same boat as you - the kit Speed-6 sold was the 944 Racing kit - i have the same one - i also have the same "issues" with the notchiness, as well as the additional vibrations that were picked up due to the replacement of the rubber bushing with the spherical bearing

the kit should work fine with the 944 Racing kit installed - if you run both it will be a pretty short pattern though, and might be more than you like - it will be somewhat adjustable, so that could be mitigated - i'll know how much very soon

the vagueness is probably either an adjustment issue or a broken lower bushing

the adjustment is one of the reasons i don't like the 944 Racing kit enough to follow that design - it seems that it requires that about once a year

the other problem in the design is the set screw - it backs out - loctite didn't even help - i had to drill the head of the screw and run a safety wire

these are all reasons i abandoned the rear mounted project - it's a bad idea - jeff had come up with a clever solution, that works, but is more complicated than useful for most - if i had to do it over again, i would not have purchased it - i would remove it, except for the fact that i no longer have the original pieces, and it's a royal pain to get in there

the new shifter will come with a new lower bushing already installed

If the speed 6 SS kit will work in conjunction with the design 1 SS kit (making the shifts extremely short), i would be willing to ship you my original pieces (including the Stuttgart shiftblock as it doesnt work in conjunction with the Speed 6 SS Kit as i understand) for the speed 6 stuff.

I wouldnt mind re adjusting and tightening everything up every 6-12 months. I only drive my 68 about 2,500 miles annually & its constantly in the air for something or other.

you'd be better off contacting duckman - his kit is on the way back to him - since i think he is selling the car, he might sell the kit too

no worries - like i said, it definitely isn't for everybody - i've gotten used to it, but i also came from a very notchy gearbox, so even this is buttery to me - i was used to a 3 synchro crashbox - some people who jump into my car hate the feel - i would not recommend that kit for anything but a pure toy - the buzz alone would drive some people nuts - the effort required to get to reverse or 6th is also an issue that might bug a lot of people - sometimes it just flat won't go into reverse, and i have to double clutch or even put it in another gear first and then re-clutch - yes, i have it adjusted correctly - no, there is nothing wrong with my gearbox - yes, i've had it apart to check it out - the geometry is just at its limits in those gears

very cool on the track - not nearly as cool on the street, especially if you like "smooth"

i dont mind what you describe at all. in fact, i prefer it. My 968 is a toy for the most part.

Either way, at the very least i will have your SS kit and cant wait to get it. That, the firewallbrace/d1 stb & rear storage cubbies are all i'm waiting on before i give my car a full detail for hershey.

i think the kit found its best possible home - it is best suited in a toy such as dino's car which is really "all business" and no monkeying around - you can test the 944 racing kit out in my car and i think you'll be a lot less upset after a few shifts - it is a real pain on a day to day basis - i'd hate it if i had to drive the car every day - if mine were anything other than a pure toy i would yank it out

on a side note, the shifter in the M3 reminds me a lot of the things that are wrong about the 944 racing kit - yes, it's precise and all that, when you're demanding quick shifts, but i've been driving it around a lot lately and getting into first or reverse just plain sucks, and the notchiness between gears is tiring when sitting in traffic
