Why The ‘Check Engine’ Light Must Be Banned
#41

i've had a few intermittent codes clear when you shut off the engine. by intermittent, i mean the second digit is a 1 and not a 2. if it triggered a 2, it never cleared on its own.

i swear i have also cleared the codes using the pedal method. i need to look into that more. it's been forever since i tried it though.

it is definitely cleared by disconnecting the battery (see page 24/28-5 of the workshop manual), though that would probably cause memory loss at the radio.

I've not been able to clear codes by the pedal method. Disconnecting the battery does the trick, but it clears other things as well -- like the presets on your radio.

So my mech plugged in the Bosch hammer but the fault code it read was different than what my blink test showed - the computer was reading knock sensors 1 and 2. Since there is no way to tell how long the codes stay in there until everything is erased, he cleared everything and we'll test it again next week when I have to return for a coolant reservoir replacement ( this one sprung a small leak / crack at the base of the lower hose spout )

The day after I had the smog test done, as I started the car in the morning the check engine light ( just by itself, not the ! light ) stayed on for almost a minute . So I shut off the car, checked the gas tank cap ( a frequent culprit of check engine lights if not sealed properly ) , started the car again but the light remained on. I figured it must have something to do with whatever the shop did when they ran the song check. Thought I should just drive it for a while to see if it clears, and sure enough and as soon as I accelerated a bit, the light went away . Drove to work, drove around running some errands at lunch, drove it back home - no sign of the light. But then the next morning when I started the car, wouldn't you know it, the friggin light came back on and stayed there until I drove it for about 30 seconds, and the. it vanished once more. Never came back on again since then, it's been several days now.
