If you sold your 968, what would replace it with?

But IMHO, all those cars are ugly ( yes, that specific Ferrari included )  so what would be the point ?

As you said before beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the Merc 190 2.3 16 is a rare Cosworth powered car, and not that ugly, certainly better looking than me

The Lancia Delta is a fun car to drive. I drove it a couple occasions in the past. I like it. It is an old school rally tribute.

Indeed, but I think we all agree the 968, in addition to all of its driving attributes, is a beautiful car.  So replacing it, must factor in that aesthetic as a key consideration, wouldn’t it ?   So I can’t think of anything in those budget parameters that would even come close to the 968, once all the factors including its classic lines are considered .   Above $ 50 K, things start to open up though ..

So that begs a different question, but on the same lines ...... What would you need to spend in order to find a looks/performance substitute for our 968s?

We have a 25 year old car. I can’t see buying an older one. Interesting to note no one has mentioned any 911’s. While I haven’t looked recently certainly they might be considered. What about Strada or Yugoslav? These were beautiful cars.

no 911s .... funny!  I didn't even consider until Rap mentioned them, anyone else likewise?  Surely the handling is funny, all the weight is at the back.....

takes a skilled person to drive one fast, with 993 being north of 50k over here, and 993 turbos north of 100k

the 964 is not as pretty, and 996/997 are just plain ugly

I would say around twice what the 968 goes for. My choice for a replacement with the same beauty and performance would be the Aston Martin Vantage V8. They run 40-70k in the US. I did find a nice one for less, but it has a salvage title and that makes insurance a bit of a challenge.

And as for older cars, I think it's almost necessary to go back a few decades in order to get the real driving experience.  I had a Boxster at the same time as my 968 and much preferred driving the 968 (my wife preferred the Boxster).  I enjoyed the Box when we first got it, but soon after it become boring, a bit more interesting with PSM turned off, but generally all a bit too quiet and smooth.  Quite apart from it being a good looking car, I love the feel and sound of driving the 968 .... iI like to be part of the process instead of almost an observer..... so I like the Jag XK for looks, but it is an automatic and I cannot believe it is as nimble as a 968...... so I guess it gets 2 or 3 out of 10

How about a Crossfire?

I have a friend who bought a worn out early 911S that had 300,000 miles on it. He stripped it down to bare steel, seam welded it, installed a roll cage. He sold the original engine and replaced it with a 2.2L that had been stretched to 2.4L. The car is light, agile, very fast, handles like you would expect from a 911. I'd take it in heart beat, but the price of a one done this way is day well beyond my price point.

I have always loved the 968 body lines. It reminds me of the Ferrari 250/275 GTB and the Cobra Daytona, both in my mind. timeless designs.

Waylander I have a 997.2 and don’t think it’s ugly. 996 maybe so. Of course beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Ever look at other men’s wives and wonder, really?

Sorry Rap no insult intended, the do nothing for me at all, just look like a beetle had an affair with a Karman Ghia, and the 911 is its offspring

I have no doubt they are good cars and I have driven a few, but I would rather have the butt ugly Panamera

My eldest has just bought the new BMW 2 series Grand Whatever, another ugly car

While I know most people don't like the looks - when I was looking and found my 968

I also looked at the BMW Z3 Coupes - Unique you wont see one every where like 968's

but unfortunately I don't fit in one (not enough leg room) I also liked the original NSX's but they

have got expensive these days and again I have a fit problem (height in those)...

I'm not a big fan of the original Boxster but I could get a Cayman or maybe the later Boxsters

Or outlaw a 240/260z would be pretty cool....

I do like cars that you won't see on every block and all of my daily drivers have had two doors and a manual

But I also keep them a long time - My 968 has been my DD since 2003.

The last generation of Boxsters S could be a decent replacement, I think you could find clean ones for under $ 25 K , but I could be wrong ( never searched the price point for those .. ) and they don’t really look like the glorified VW bugs, upside down bathtubs , or bloated frogs , as most 911s do ..   IMHO

I look at my wife and think really everyday. Really how come your with me! I’ve never understood, everyone’s entitled to your opinion unless you live in the US, the condescension about 911’s. I don’t see the before mentioned shapes. Except of course for a 356. Again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My targa 4s with its wide rear just looks fast. Different lines than the 968 but still pleasing to the eye.

Rap I also don't see the common dislike of the look of a 911. I Had a 2009 997.2 c4s Cab at the same time that I had 2 968s.  Before that I had a 2008 Cayman S, which I also really liked. I enjoyed every one.

Sadly, I often wonder if, at least for some people, that the dislike is really "I have a 968, and I've had it a long time, and I have grown used to it, but I can't afford a 911, and I like my 968, and I resent you being able to have one (especially if you an old fart at the country club), and so I don't like 911s".

Maybe? (And without accusing ANYONE)
