After Cluster Removal Temp guage reading high
#1

Hey folks,

I removed my 1994 968 gauge cluster a year ago to replace the bulbs - put everything back together and it worked fine. In Feb the odometer stopped working so I fixed that, but after reinstalling the cluster this time the temp gauge registers high. It seems to work "normally" (doesnt jump around or peg or anything). I checked temp with an IR gun and with thermostat housing at 180 degrees F the gauge is showing at the high normal water temp mark on the gauge. I disconnected the three connectors from the gauge pod again and replugged them and it is exactly the same (reads at high mark when should be at low mark).

I am going to try cleaning the contacts on the connector next, but in general was wondering if there is a way to calibrate or adjust the gauge to try and get it reading correctly. Nothing else has been done other than disconnecting and reconnecting the gauge cluster, so pretty sure something with the cluster removal is what is causing the gauge to now read high.

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated!

Perhaps you inadvertently moved the needle when you had the cluster out? I was doing a 944 cluster and knocked a needle off .... fun time!

I don't think there is a way to calibrate these except to adjust the needle.

thanks for the response. I removed cluster again this AM and cleaned all of the connectors. Put it back together and same problem. I checked the needle and it is not reading strangely when cold (I have a 944 S2 and looked at position on that cold and both S2 and 968 are in the same position cold) and the needle is solid /doesn't seem to have been knocked around or loosened.

I think I will try a new sending unit and see if that fixes it, but it was fine prior to gauge removal and then off when put back together so I doubt this will fix it. Is there someplace I can find specs to test the voltage, etc. coming from the sensor?

Thanks!

I just looked on Clark's garage and will follow the instructions for testing the sending unit for a late model 944 (let me know if this is not the same sending unit).

Thanks!
