How accurate is the voltage guage?
#1

My battery voltage gauge is pegged at 16V most of the time (sometimes it drops to around 14V). The battery shows 12.75V at rest and 12.9V at idle.  I did a search and found some posts on the gauge reading low, but mine is always high. Suggestions ?

That is very curious. Most of us have gauges that read low rather than high. My gauge became much more accurate when I pulled the dashboard and while I was replacing the lights, I cleaned the contacts on all of the gauge posts. Now my fuel gauge reads almost full within the tank is full, and the voltage gauge reads close to what an external gauge indicates.

+1 on contacts...

In general, I rarely believe my instruments in the absence of any other evidence.

If you have your grounds clean...  then the instruments are fairly accurate.  If not, not so much.  These cars are for the most part 25 years old.  The wiring and grounds may need help.

Cleaning the grounds in the instrument cluster can make a large difference.

Like Joel says, it should read pretty accurate. Something is wrong. I definitely agree on cleaning the cluster grounds. And cleaning as many grounds as you get find or get to as a matter of fact.

This thread is prompting me to ask if there is a vehicle grounding diagram for our 968. Does anyone know where to find a copy of such a diagram?

The GP are marked out in the wiring diagrams in the manual section 5

Could you by any chance have a variable output alternator? They can be set to charge at a higher rate.

The alternator doesn't change, but you can buy an adjustable voltage regulator.  I have one in my car set to charge at 14.3 volts.  However, make sure your wiring and grounds are up to snuff first.  Just takes some cleaning in the cluster, behind the dash, and a couple of chassis points.

My gauge has never read more than about 12.5 in any scenarios. 99 % of the time its just a hair above the 12 V line while driving . I got a new battery this weekend and used the external voltmeter to check it at rest and while starting . At rest the voltmeter shows 12.5 , when started it goes to 13 - 13.2 in a couple of seconds as the alternator kicks in. But while driving its back right at the 12 v line , maybe 1/10 above that ( you consider 10 as the distance between 12 v and 14 v.)

Waylander,

Could you send me the Grounding Points diagram in a .GIF, .JPG or pdf please. I'd like to pin it.

Thanks,

Jay

My voltage meter is showing, at start up, 13V charge, and drops to 12.5 when fully charged. Not sure it is good for the battery to show a higher charge....... it might shorten its life.....Then again these meters are not exactly scientific.

PS: for all of you waiting to attack my English.....This is the way GAUGE is spelled

Hello Everyone,

I have the same issue, my voltmeter is on the max 16v...

I check :
  • Alternator
  • Battery
  • Ground
I check voltmeter on the battery , everything is ok i have 13.8 / 14V after start.

I try to change with a 944 S2 gauge , the gauge have good reading same as the mutlimeter...

But 944 S2 Voltmeter gauge are not the same i guess as 968, for example the oil pressure was not exactly the same reading.

Also they don't have "Washerfluid light" / "Tiptronic light" ... could be worse... where are the ground into the cluster ? i want to repair this *** things.

I have the same problems on fuel and water temp...

thanks for help

How can i repair the gauge ?

Btw i have with the original cluster a oil pressure at 4 on start with the other one i can have 5.

Thanks

I would suggest that a good clean of all the connections on the cluster, A,B,C both plugs and sockets then the fuel and temp clean the two brass rugby ball shaped lumps under the little nuts, wire wool is good

Clean the earth points these are both sides of the firewall, so laying in the footwells look straight up and you will see them

I also think there is a trimmer on the voltmeter that makes it adjustable

You have a voltmeter so should good to go

Thanks Waylander,

I just clean all ground and a b c plug, but no change.

Changing trimmer position but nothing happen.

I decided to put my older cluster from a 944, I can have a good reading. But the gauge is very different, it's look like the same but there is no tiptronic light or washerfluid or check engine.

I suppose only the voltmeter itself is in bad condition. May be I can put the old one into the 968 cluster, and adjust this one ?

Yes I think the actual gauge is the same, wear gloves as you will struggle to get fingerprints off the Matt Black faces
