And the photos don't do it justice ; in real life that horizon blue has a sliver-ish accent to it ( the metallic paint component on the horizon blue base just adds a dimension to the color more so than it does on other 968 colors IMO ) so it's pretty jaw-dropping .

QUESTION: I see the door side bars (whatever you call them) on many Euro cars but not on many NA cars. Was that an option?

 

My 928 had it as an delete option.

Had to be an add-on option for NA cars , because my blue 968 did not have them but I had seen other 968s with those and liked it a lot so I rushed to the dealer and bought them soon after I got the car. IIRC it's called molding or something like that . Not for the faint of wallet ; they cost $ 400 + unpainted , and the body shop charged another $ 200 to match color paint them. And that was more than 18 years ago . But I haven't seen the reflector piece or whatever that yellow thingamajiggy is ( at the front of the strips ) on any cars in the US.

Ok let see if I can answer the questions


The side mouldings or bump strips were an optional extra, they are on my car too and on the build sticker in the boot (M418), it’s quite common for cars here to have had these removed over here, as the cars owners prefer the cleaner look without them, so there is quite often sets for sale on eBay


The parking issue, it was only dumped there for 2 mins for the photo, not parked up


The orange at the end of the body mouldings is the direction indicator repeater, this is standard on all ROW cars, borrowed off a MKII Golf

Here's Mine with the body Mouldings and Indicator Repeaters, I prefer the USA wings without the indicators, and its also got the Saratoga Roof fitted in this picture

So the indicator repeater is not just a reflective thing, but also flashes when your turn blinkers are on, right ?

Cool feature, why the heck didn't N.A. cars come with that ?! Though it would probably be futile, most drivers here have no preripheral vision anyway, so they would not notice anything blinking on the side of a car ;-) ;-)

That's why most cars in the USA have side reflectors  :clap:

That may also be the reason there a bit cheaper then here in Europe... Popcorn

Most Americans don't know what the turn signal is for or are too lazy to use it anyway so why have side turn signals The regulatory committees decided that it was very important to have tiny stupid rubber bumpers installed between the turn signal and the fog light. Having good headlights also seems to be a crime in the US. In the eighties VOLVO had to change their headlights to wimpy ones.

Anyone here who has driven in Florida will attest to the fact that turn signals are blinking permanently, and it's tough to get the drivers attention to that because it's difficult to see them; you might barely notice some "blue hair" about 1inch above the steering wheel level , but it's definitely a challenging task to let them know their blinker is on ....and has been on since the 1970s ! ;-)

as I recall, the issue with headlights in Volvo's in the 1980s was the glass lobby and the lightbulb lobby. They didn't want headlights where just the bulb could be replaced, so they went with the sealed beam units that were common in American cars. Eventually they figured it out.

Keep in mind that if you are over 80 years of age it is totally legal to have your turn signal on all the time...That is if you drive a Cadillac Seville off course.
