Help resetting computer?
#1

Well, after finaggling and tweaking, I finally got all my guage cluster lights to illuminate as they should (speedo/tach, etc...lighting) - but now - probably because I started and moved the car with the cluster completely out (a no-no?) - the big, rectangular dummy light that has an '!' in it (as in when the e-brake's on) won't go out! I was told to disconnect both battery leads and touch them together to reset the computer and clear it, but unless I was to hold the two together for a period, it did nothing!? I've also heard that the 968s 'technically' may not hane a computer, per se, to reset?

I'm stumped but I don't want to go to the shop and waste $50 - or whatever - if it's a basic thing I can do!

Any help??

Yes, you should never turn on the ignition with the guage cluster or steering removed. Now you know

Unfortunately, you will need to go to a specialist/dealer clear the code. Or you can buy a Duramteric Diagnostic tool and do it yourself. Me and a couple of other guys on the forum have one and they are great.

The red "!" should only illuminate in conjunction with another warning light. Perhaps you have a burnt out bulb somewhere in the cluster? I had an airbag light when I started the car without my cluster installed.

I have built a cct board to clear the codes but you will have to take the ferry ($$$) to Campbell River to get it cleared, I will throw in a beer I could loan you the set-up but I'm afraid the mail in 2 directions might be close to the price of getting a shop to do it.

lol Thanx, but I think I may have to bite the bullet and just bring it to one of the shops in town (indy) I hope an hours' charge covers it!? At least I got my lighting working.....for a price!! lol

Yea I got a quote of 45.00 from Scan Auto and decided to just make the board for the 2 minutes they would spend on resetting the light.

^^ Talked to SCAN and made an appt. to reset it...they said something else must be tripping that '!' light - and sure enough - the airbag light was on, but really small so I missed it! I have to go in Thursday and he said about half an hour........?! Not 2 minutes....bummer.

Thanx everyone!

Actually it's only $2.00 to push the button, it's $48.00 for knowing which button to push.

Well, $40 cash and it's good to go. Yup - simple laptop push of a few buttons and that's all it took :^/ - ah well, at least I don't have this big, ominous ! staring at me all the time! lol

Darryl,
Me too (with the warning light). I have a 93 968 and my warning light is now on along with the airbag light. Came on recently after a dead battery. Did you have any trick to clearing the code or do you know of someone in the ocean city area of Maryland that can clear the code or check it out. All the people and shops that I have called do not have the proper equipment to work on a Porsche of that year.

Thanks

Jim

it's a great gadget - i really need to upgrade mine to the pro, due to the number of cars that roll through here, and the limit of 3 cars on the enthusiast model
