Trip Meter resetting itself
#1

I recently had my A/C replaced.  When I got the car back, I noticed this weird clunking sound, which I finally worked out was the trip meter resetting itself.  I assumed that there was a problem with the switch on that super weird reset button, but the trip meter still keeps resetting itself randomly (and often) even when the switch is removed.  I have replaced the gears already, and everything was working fine until the dash was removed to replaces the evaporator.

Has anyone else had this problem or an ideas?

Peter

Found the problem.  The mechanic who had installed my new A/C, had switched the plugs that service the dimmer and the trip meter.  They are identical plugs, but one of them (typical porsche attention to detail) was tagged with a T.  Now onto teh sunroof problem...

I have a problem with my trip meter and speedometer both are not working at all. It is the total miles on my car that doesn t work, the speed I am traveling is fine, but that is all? Any ideas, is this an electrical problem or mechanical? Any help greatly appreciated

. Thanks

Very well known issue - there is a small plastic gear inside the speedo assembly which disintegrates with age.

Google "968 odometer gear" to get the information you need. It is an inexpensive fix but fiddly.

Removal/disassembly of the instrument cluster is by far the biggest challenge to repair. The electrical connectors in particular are unusual and difficult to remove the first time. It is possible but challenging to remove the cluster without removing the steering wheel. If you are doing this job for the first time, you should just plan to remove the wheel.

If you plan to have someone else do the job, be sure they disconnect the battery and wait at least 30 min to remove the steering wheel - the airbag light otherwise may come on and it cannot be cleared without a specialized tool (Bosch hammer or Durametric).

hot968 you need to go to odometer gear repair which I have just posted on in order to bring it back into view on this list of 10 topics. Otherwise search using odometer for more information. Good luck

Sorry Mike, I've just retread your Google reference.... no matter, more information is better than not enough.

excellent video and talk to show how this is done BUTTT this is way beyond what I can do. Does any one know about what it would run to have this repaired by Porsche? I know this is stupid but my amount of miles on car 67, 280 also stopped working not sure when but found out when had it inspected this year. Thanks for the excellent information.

Oh Boy this is going to sound funny but I thought the trip meter was the odometer, I think it is the speedometer that is broken?? What ever tracks the miles from day one is broken? what is this called?

Hot968 the odometer records distance traveled from day one and cannot ordinarily be zeroed, it has 6 digits. The trip meter has 4 digits, one of which is white, and sits immediately below the odo. The trip is zeroed only when your car is stationary by way of pressing the knurled button integrated into the central air vanes. When you press that button (ignition on) you will probably hear a clunk. If your odo and trip have stopped recording then most likely your gears have stripped. There probably isn't a car on this forum that hasn't had these gears replaced at least once and there is plenty of experience and advice on this forum.

At a Porsche service center, this is probably going to be quite expensive. I am guessing they would charge at least 3 hours labor, at Porsche prices. I doubt they would repair the gears, but rather, they would probably replace the speedometer head unit. The list price for that part is $838. So, expensive.

The gear repair is not difficult but the problem is that no one working at a local shop will have any familiarity with the process, nor will they want to spend the necessary time learning. So a more cost-effective alternative would be to have your local independent shop just remove the cluster, which you could mail yourself to one of many speedometer repair shops (North Hollywood is well-known for Porsche repair), then have the shop reinstall the cluster when it arrives back. That would be a lot less expensive. Shouldn't be more than 2 hours labor, so a few hundred for the labor and maybe $200-$300 for the repair.

Exactly .  Twenty + years ago when I had this done it was at a VDO instrument repair shop , called Palo Alto Speedometer shop here in NorCal ,  and they did that for about $ 250 ( parts and labor ). IIRC,  but ..that was over two decades ago.  Probably pricier now .

thank you everyone for the excellent very detailed information. I am glad it is fixable but the cost. Unfortunately  I cannot do this job myself but I know a mechanic who used to work at the Porsche dealer ship he is retired but I am going to ask him if he will fix it. This is such a great site I really got mixed up as to just what part was broken. Stay well and safe everyone
