Odometer/trip recorder restored to action but. . . .
#1

My speedometer has come home and is now installed and working, though I note that the trip numbers are about a quarter turn lower in the window for them than they should be. I chose to pull the air bag and steering wheel prior to removing the instrument cluster. I can now say, as some forum members advised, that the cluster can be removed without doing that. I did it because I was afraid I would have to deal with a bunch of wires, etc., on the back of the unit, but in fact there are just the three major plug in wire connectors. What happened after I restarted the car--from outside the passenger seat I might add--the car started and the air bag check light and emergency brake light stayed lit. This was one of the predictions. I tried the usual dodge of disconnecting the battery again, but no luck. So, I assume that I have to go to a repair shop with the "hammer" and try to get the check light reset---I had to do this once a few years back in Northern Virginia, and it was about $80. Is there any chance I plugged the airbag connector wire in the wrong way? I think it was one directional. And, oh yes, I now recognize that I could have continued with dismantling the speedo and installing the gear myself at a substantial savings. Any observations?

I don't think so. I think when you disconnect those plugs, it triggers the airbag light and the dreaded ! so you just have to get them reset.

if you disconnect the airbag before the system has had a chance to discharge its stored voltage, then the light trips - you have to let it sit for quite a while after disconnecting the battery, before you can unplug the airbag

Being cautious, I had disconnected the battery the night before I disconnected the air bag. Nonetheless, it did what it did. I think the wire connection to the air bag would work only one way, but possibly I was wrong.

i think it only goes one way too

very odd that it threw the light after that long - any chance you turned the key on with it disconnected?

No, I was very wary about that.
